Since she enrolled in the fall of 19^ Janice has more than gotten h»^eet wet" in college courses. This e rshe "enjoyed" the challenge of Sn, both senior and cAGE-and surviving thenn. Her musical training has involved courses Tadvanced music theo^ where he along with classmate Brad May, ad'written fugues and "three part inventior«" (or "contraptions as Brad is want to say), as well as history classes and a conducting class She studied voice with Thea Engelson, an accompKsh^ vomI pefformer and instructor and the wife of Rob Engelson. On April 20, Janice gave a stunri- Ing seniof recital as a culmination of her musical training. For awhile, she pondered about what to do with music next. A talent scout for 'The Lost Colony" outdoor drama here in North Carolina expressed intwest in her, and she considered doing an outdoor drama over the summer and even sent out applications. But something happened about two months ago that changed Janice's entire life and sense of direc tion. Greg came back from a military school in Kansas to tell Janice that he wanted a divorce. But he only beat Janice to the punch, for she long ago realized that theirs was not the best of marriages. "Greg never supported my sing ing," says Janice. "He was com pletely against it-jealous of it. At one time he gave me an ultimatum; either my music or him. I couldn't answer him at the time, but look how it's worked out. I held on for so long because I hoped that I could change things. But I couldn't~l won't-give up my music-my life-for such selfish demands." This is a hard time for Janice, but she has the support of her friends at St. Andrews. "All the friends I've made here and all the professors I've known-they've become my family." Janice is especially grateful to Rob Engelson, Carl Bennett, Barbara Gratz, Roberta Rankin, Catharine Neylans, Bob Martin, Veronica Newman and others for the support they have given her in dealing with the pain of her divorce. Veronica Newman was instrumental in helping Janice find a direction for her music career. She brought to Janice's at tention The San Francisco Con servatory of Music, and Janice fell in love with it. The only other school she is considering is UNC-G for its good music department, but especially because it is close to her "family." The long awaited day of gradua tion is over, and Janice looks to the future with eagerness and hope-and yet with a little sadness. She is preparing to return to California by the first of JUne to stay with her parents for awhile. Already there have been so many changes in her life. Just two weeks ago she sold her piano, a friend of over twelve years. feel like a part of me is gone." But with change comes hope-and the future. For so many years, Janice has 6®n a butterfly, pinned in her co coon. But now she is free-free to spread her wings and show her inner beauty and free to fly. I think of Janice, I am often eminded of the end part of the Mary Tyler Moore anBc*^ "V know-the part that gllgoing to make it after r Janice's many hobbies include cooking, sewing, cross-stitching, dancing, poetry, aerobics, and swimming. She's even taken a drawing class, and says she would love to learn to ski, and what was that other one? Oh, yes—music! Parting (Dedicated to my friends). / want to give my friends a special gift to show them how much / care, for they gave me strength even though I was broken, my heart filled with pain and despair. Those sweet friends are truly my family, for they kept the walls up right, they showed me my individual self, and to not give up the fight. / give to my friends my love and my prayers, and our friendship that has grown, and they have given me an open door to cultivate seeds, gently planted and sown. / will truly miss those friends, so close to my heart, but our friendship will continue to last, even though we must soon to part.
