Dear Readers, He-e it is ... the final issue of THE LANCE for the spring of 1986. Many of you are probably wondering why it is late coming, and there are three reasons why the paper was printed after everyone left school. First of all, the original printing date was scheduled for May 15th. Because this issue was being dedicated to the Class of 86 we had planned months ago to run special ads congratulating all graduates. However, the registrars office could rx)t provide the names of those definitely graduating until after the paper was scheduled to be printed. Therefore, in order to avoid embarrassing those who would be unabte to graduate at the last minute we had to postpone printing for a week. Secondly, members of THE LANCE staff had to devote time to studying for exams and it was just not possible to put the paper together during such a hectic time. Finally, the decision to print late was made so that all articles submitted could definitely be run. If THE LANCE had come out on time it would have meant cutting all major articles, letters to the editor, and senior contributions from the final issue. Hopefully, you will agree that it's "better late than never" and I can definitely say that the paper is better now than it would have been if we had gone to press a week early. I would like to personally thank all those who supported THE LANCE durir^ the past term. Many changes were made and it was only through direct feedback that we were able to measure the success (or failure) of the char>ges. Also, we have been given many new ideas to work with for the coming school year. The en couragement shown for the paper this term has made it possible to look forward to the fall with a new sense of energy and anticipation. Well, the inevitable can no longer be postponed. Have a terrific and safe summer. Sincerely, Heidi Jernigan To AM Members of the St. An drews Community: I am certain that over the past few weeks many of you have noticed and noted with aversion the inappropriately placed birth day greeting on the library wall. Since I an the party responsible for this depredation, I feel it is my duty as a member of the St. An drews community to apologize to you, my fellow members of the community, for my inconsiderate action. in the process of painting the library wall, there were oaths, both written and unwritten, that I chose to forswear. What I did, however, was not meant as a statement of disrespect towards the community, nor was it meant as an iHK»nceived practical joke. What was done was done for deeply rooted personal reasons, and ! contend that my transgres sion was entirely out of character. Despite these circumstances, there is no justification for what I have done. I cannot ask any or everyone in the community to understand why I deemed it necessary to garnish the library wall in such a tactless fashion. I am, however, asking you, the members of the St. Andrews society and especially all graduating seniors to accept my most forthright apology and forgive me for the mistake I have made. Sincerely, David Southwood-Smith Short term leases available in furnished or unfurnished. Phone 967-2234 or 967-2231 Today! Letters To The Editor To the Editor: This letter is to express my anger and total disgust for the senseless act of vandalism directed against the DeTamble Library a little more than a week ago, and I am not in the mood not the position to be civil. When I reached the end of the causewalk that fateful morning and turned the corner to gaze upon the giant, red spray-painted message, "Happy B-Day, Leigh", I froze in my step, for the big, bold letters were a shock to my sense o fhow the front of DeTamble and its normal, surroun ding pleasant scense was supposed to look. I simply could not believe what I was seeing. This was nothing but pure, senseless vandalism, and the perpetrator had the gall and the rrerve to present it in the form a birth day message! I am sure "Leigh" less than appreciated having her name used in such a deplorable act-an act which in no way expresses friendship or sentiment appropriate for a birth day wish. This really angers me, because I believe I know (many of us do) the "Leigh" the message ad dresses, and, if she is the victim of this abomination, she in no way deserves to have her name sullied in this disgusting manner. I am shocked to see this kind of behavior from a member of the S.A. community. For the entire school year I have been witness to all kinds of idiotic destruction and vandalism, but this get s the booby prize. I am fed up with it all! What is really stupid is that students complain about the high cost of tuition, the ser vice or lack thereof of SAGA, and the conditions of the campus, the bathrooms, you name it-then they turn around and break chairs, litter, spray paint walls, steal glasses and dished from SAGE, break windows, and whatever else their neanderthal little minds conceive of next. Hey, I'm paying to go to this school, too- and so are many other students if you ever noticed, and I refuse to sit and watch my money wasted on senseless repairs and replacements when it could be spent in making our education worth what we're paying for. So, 1 have a message for you, mystery vandal; "YOU ARE A JERK!" You can take your spray paint and destructive urges and just get out! And anyone who has similar inclinations can follow right behind. I am sure the college will be all the better for it! John D. Ward To The Editor: We have met the enemy, and he has spray paint. Platitudinal sayings, and personal missives, that hold no import for the populace affronted by their effrontery, those who are of the mindset that "if you want to catch someone's attention, insult their sense of aesthetic sensibilities", fail to comprehend the fact that, no mat ter the possible worth of their com munication, any innate value it might have will be tainted beyond reprieve by the inappropriate nature of the presentation. The value of freedom of speech is that is is freedom to demonstrate responsiblity in voicing sentiments. That is the crux. Freedom of speech is not freedom to blither, nor license to act without regard for accepted guidelines. In such instances, speech ceases to be free, and instead pays the price of penury. No, the enemy of happiness is not culture, but rather lack there of. Dan Wetmore Dear Editor, Why doesn't THE LANCE carry any sports? 1 personally feel like the paper runs some unimportant ar ticles, while all the spring sports are neglected. I am a member of the Wor len's Tf nnis Team and 1 feel we, as well as all the teams, ceserve a lit tle recognition. Some of the teams did quite well in the DIAC tour naments. It would also be nice to be able to read about other sports because traveling keeps us from knowing how all the teams are do ing. Sincerely, Juoy Baxter Editor's Response: First of all let me thank you for voicing your concern directly to the newspaper. 1 have spoken with Judy about the problem but feel that everyone deserves an answer. Those people that want something covered in the paper become involved and do something about it ... they write. We definitely need sports writers. Perhaps the teams could appoint one or two peo pie next year who will prepare statements which the paper can print. It is important to remember that the paper is run by volunteere (most of whom receive no academic credits for their hard work). Simpy put: If you care enough about it an want to see it in THE LANCE then write it up and submit it. It Wl printed!
