Page 11 Kunrnc: Volleyballl Team 9-3 After Returning From Virginia By Myla Garren The St. Andrews volleyball team returned Saturday Sept 27 after a 3 day tnp to Virginia to play two matches Thursday and Friday evening and Saturday in an all-day tournament. The team brought home a runner-uo trophy earned Saturday at the tournament at Bridgewater College Besides the runner-up trophy presented to the team as a whole Saturday evening, the team returned with three of six All-Tournament trophies presented to Kristi Kluegel, Lori Hughes, and Lori Stroud These awards were nominated by the team members of all participating teams Saturday according to each player's outstanding performance. The tournament was a "round robin" tournament, in which each team played every other team present, including the following schools- Bridgewater College, Rridqewater College JV, NC Wesleyan College Mary Baldwin, and Gettysburg The St. Andrews "Coots", more commonly referred to than Knighties or "Lady Knights", won every game as well as every match of the day up until the championship match, which took place at 3:30. Opposing both non-conference and conference teams, the team's record went from 4 and 1 as of Thursday to 9 and 3 as of Saturday, which gave them only two losses of seven for the overall Virginia trip, one being the championship game, and the other being Eastern Mennonite last Fri day, a team chosen to win its own ODAC conference. With this, the team remained undefeated in the Dixie Conference, tied for first place in the con ference with Greensboro College, and returned with an upcoming impor tant conference match against Methodist on Tuesday. The next matches will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Pembroke State University against the home team and Elon College, and the team will be traveling on fall break to play NC Wesleyan, Christopher Newport College, and UNC-G. Coach Williams was pleased with the trip overall, and stated after the trip, "The object of going to tournaments like this is to learn - to give everyone a chance to play and get playing experience, and to play as a team - so that you can get better as the season progresses." This tourna ment was the first that the team have been in this season, though the team and the coach feel pre-season helped them condition for this and other such experiences. "Hopefully everything we learned we'll be able to put in to use. I think everybody did improve, and did a lot of things we haven't done before, and learned that we can. play with a good team," Coach Williams also commented. As well as a comment on the past experience for the team as a whole and overall goals, Williams also cited certain players for their outstanding performance. For the weekly cumulative average of 23 games, Lori Stroud and Kristi Kluegel had exceptional averages for hitting, or "attacks" on the ball, which is somewhat comparable to a batting average. A .250 is con sidered to be a good score, and Stroud received a .255 and Kluegel a .253. Also for this week, Stroud had 10 blocks and 36 digs, defensive plays that result in playing a low ball or a powerfully hit ball high enough off the floor so that someone else can put the ball into play. Kluegel succeeded in 51 digs, 19 solo blocks, and 12 assists. For the overall season, above average attack percentages are: Margaret Fuller, with .253 and Kristi Kluegel, with .259; again, a .250 considered good. From a defensive perspective, the team in general has done exceptional- y well. With a 1.0 being considered good percentage for digs per game, leading the team are: Kluegel - 1.892, Dawn Langley ■ 1.70::;,^^ori "Bird" Hughes -1.588. The team as a whole maintains a 1.017. Leading the team in the most important defensive play, the block, uegel has an incredible 1.595 in comparison of a average good score of ■5; Stroud having .703 and Langley with a .622.
