When the lights dimmed, Lissa Newton appeared, singing anc playing the guitar, setting the stage for Scratch. Thus was opening night. Scratch is the play adaptation by Archibald MacLeish of the story The Devil and Daniel Webster. In the play, Jabez Stone has sok his sold to the Devil, and when Scratch comes to collect Stone's soul Daniel Webster defends Stone before a jury of "Americans", corpses brought back to life. The jury, with our own Dr. Bennett playing the pa of the judge, swayed by Webster's argument of defense, gives Stone back his soul. D. Kenneth (D.K.)Beyer, director of Scratch, said he was "ve proud of the student s' dedication and diligence." Dr. Catherine Ney- lans, professor of Languages, said that the play was good and that th( best part was the casting of Scratch. She said the role was extremely well done, especially Miss Sarno's movements across the stage. Scratch and The Good Doctorwere both well received with 5 out of 8 performances sold out. During 2 shows people had to be turned away. D.K. Beyer, new to the St. Andrews community this yea believes that the dying theater program has been "revitalized" and says that "Theater is back!" Coming in April are Rosencrantz and Guildenstein Are Dead by Tom Steppard and Stage Struckhy Simon Gray. The spring theatrical season promises to be just as outstanding!
