March 13,1987 Page 10 "ThR Library of the Future" _ DeTamble to Expand First Floor Facilities By Heidi Jernlgan Editor St. Andrews, in its 25th year, is once again meeting its committment to innovation in education with the creation of the library of the future," According to college president A.P. Perkinson, the idea is "simple, compelling, costly and cost-effective." "The goal is to make DeTamble Library the center for Chafkin Visit (continued from page 4) U.S. and developing countries, including community ' develop ment, civil rights interests and investment programs. Mr. Chafkin served as Executive Vice-President of the Local Initiatives Support Corpor ation. This institution serves as a financer and exporter of projects aimed towards aiding communities in generating income and reducing governmen tal dependence. In addition. IVIr. Chafkin has written numerous papers on the topic of hunger and nutrition. Mr. Chafkin's wife, Dorothy, is an expert in the study of the aging process. She has been responsible for developing a program of healthcare for the elderly poor in the Bronx. She will be meeting with the Scotland County Hospice Board and hopefully with classes at St. Andrews. There will be a number of opportunities for everyone to meet, listen and talk with Mr. Chafkin during his visit to St. Andrews. His planned itinerary, at this point, is as follows: 3/15, 9 a.m. Chinese Politics, LA-154 3/15, 2:50 p.m. Operations Management, LA-102 3/17, 8 a.m. Marketing, LA-100 3/17, 3/17, 7 p.m. Community Address(Beik) 3/18, 8 a.m. Lit. of the i-lolocaust, LA-A9 There is the possibility of an appearance by Mr. Chafkin speaking at Writer's Forum on Thursday. March 19 at 8 p.m. in Mecklenburg Main Lounge, to address the writing of autobio graphies. Mr. Chafkin will also meet with the Laurinburg Rotary Club and the Scotland Board of Human Resources. Postings of Mr. Chafkin's itinerary will appear at the Belk Center, the LA entrance, and "Comings and Going." It is hoped that all will take advantage of this opportunity to meet Sol H. Chafkin and his wife during their visit to St. Andrews. the storage, retrieval and active use of information in a variety of forms, and easily-accessible to all students — with special provision for our students with physical limitation." Perkinson stated in a recent letter to the Pew Freedom Trust in Philadelphia, PA. The key components of this impressive proposal are an online computer catalog, mobile shelving, and the expansion of the microcomputer laboratory. In 1977, DeTamble Library joined the Ohio College Library Center computer database network. A complete file of bibliographic data will be compiled which will lead to the eventual elimination of the traditional card catalog. This innovation will make library research easier for ail students, but it will be especially beneficial to students in wheelchairs who have found it difficult to use a traditional card catalog. According to Betty Holmes, the college librarian, the cataloging system will be housed on the first floor of DeTamble "where it should have been all along." Spatial limitations in the library will be virtually eliminated with the installation of mobile shelving units. It is estimated that space will be created for an additional 14.000 volumes. The rotating shelves will be especially beneficial to those students in wheelchairs who have difficulty reaching books on the upper Freebie for Writers If you’re considering a journalism career, you'll surely be interested in two publications available at no cost from the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, Dept. P, Box 300, Princeton, N.J. 08543-0300. One is The Journalism Career and Scholarship Guide, a 190-page book listing every college in the U.S. that offers majors in journalism and communications studies. The second is The Journalism Guide for Minorities, which includes a list of news paper recnjiters for college students who are looking for work as reporters and editors. Both publications contain practical information about preparation for a journalism career, jobs and salaries, intern programs and almost everything you may want to know about the field of newspapering. shelves. Finally, in order to accommodate a wide range of commercial and educational computer software and hardware, it will be necessary to increase the space in DeTamble allocated to the microcomputer laboratory. Architectural plans call for the structural expansion of the library's first floor facilities by an estimated 1476 square feet. The additional space will accom modate up to 25 new microcomputer stations with enough room for wheelchairs. The extension will allow enough space for a reading/ study area to the left of the library's entrance. Due to the generosity of the Pew Freedom Trust in Philadelphia over half of the costs for the "library of the future" have been met. Completion of the new facilities is expected to be sometime in the fall of 1987. (Editor’s Note: This is a very exciting time to be at St. Andrews as we see the growth of our college happening right before our eyes. As soon as the architectural plans for the new facilities are finalized we will run them in THE LANCE.) Eight Named to '87 Who's Who Eight St. Andrews stu dents were recently named to "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges." The eight are to be included in the 1987 edition of the Who's Who book. They were chosen based upon their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities, and potential for continued success. A campus nominating committee and the editor of the book chose the students. The students are: Jack C. (Skip) Anderson, Luke (Hal) Driggers. Ml. Paula N. Ferguson, Mary Margaret Fuller, Linda I. Keener, Joanne Marie Ketch. Nancy Lillian Shupe. and David Scott Sylvester. These students join an elite group of college students selected from more than 1.400 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states and several foreign nations. Outstanding students have been honored in the annual directory since 1934. Cataloging of Abrams' Collection Underway (continued from page 1) He cast "Gypsy with Angela years," she said. Landsbury in its productions in New York and London. He cast "Platinum" with Alexis Smith, the Jane Powell-Howard Keel production of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and "The Royal Family." Abrams left casting in 1981 to become an associate producer with RKO-National Film and Television Productions. He became the assistant director of the Independent Booking Office in the final three years of its operation. In 1985, he founded the Road Resources Department which incorporated the Independent Booking Office into the League, making it a national business league. It's the life that Abrams lived that is echoed in the collection housed at St. Andrews. "It's really exciting what our theater students are going to be able to do with some of the materials that Amos has given us." said Betty Holmes, the St. Andrews librarian who is in charge of the collection. "These are some direct sources for use in studying the New York theater scene in the past 15 Holmes is busy cataloging the collection now. She can't estimate its monetary worth, but it includes a large amount of first print autographed books. original Broadway posters and 683 recordings of musical and movie soundtracks. Perhaps it's the dust on the old books, letters and posters, but somehow the echoes of the man Amos Abrams seem to sit heavy in the air in the small room in the library. He was one of the foremost casting directors on Broadway, and the college is proud of that fact. "Because of the contributions of Amos Abrams, St. Andrews has a place in the hearts of the New York theater world," said college president A.P. Perkinson, Jr. "Because of wFk> he was, Amos will live forever in the heart of St. Andrews." Editor's Note: Student Amy Sarno is putting together a display of Abrams' memorabilia. It will show in the Vardell gallery sometime this spring.
