B.S.U. Plans
Activities
The Black Student Union of
St. Andrews Presbyterian College is
embarking on a campaign which will
invite participation of all students on St.
Andrews’ campus. “We would like to
encourage all students to participate in
the events that the B.S.U. is sponsoring
this year,” states Erick Payne, President
of the Black Student Union. “We are
planning several projects this year that
we are sure everyone would be inter
ested in.”
Payne goes on to say that the
B.S.U. has had a reputation of being a
club exclusively for minorities and one
that is known on campus as basically a
partying organization. “It has never
been a policy or anything “understood”
that the Black StudentUnion isan exclu
sively Black organization. Wehavehad
our doors open to all interested students
since I’ve attended St. Andrews. We
have had successful parties in the past,
but we are not just a party organization.”
The Organization has planned
many interesting events to fill up their
calendar year. They are working on a
Halloween u-eat for the disabled chil
dren of the Scotland House for the last
weekend in October. They are also
working on their first party of the year
on November 20. Payne said that they
have already begun to plan for Black
History Month of February.
“We are still going to have the
best parties on campus,” said Payne.
“But that won’t be the extent of our
program by far. We are going to work
hard on making sure that we provide a
cultural and educational experience as
well as a few good parties for the St.
Andrews community.”
If there are any questions about
the organization or if you have any
suggestions or interests, contact Erick
Payne, S APC Box 442 or Keith Feaster,

World Party
“Private Revolution”
Chrysalis Records
Just when you think the
sounds of the 60’s are gone or only
available in repackaged form, a new
rock’n’roll band breaks the shell of the
80’s to the tune of some of rock’s
greatest roots. Entering the synth-pop
world of rock, and thwarting the entire
scene, is the band. World Party. Led by
Karl Wallinger of Britain’s famed
Waterboys, this band is a tribute to the
rhythm groups of the late 1960’s.Their
CD, “Private Revolution,” is just that
- a revolution through many different
moods and motions; the kind that inspire
one to keep this album in his/her own
private stock.
To enjoy this disc, one needs
to appreciate the Dylan 60’s, an artistic
age of rock that seems to have vanished
silently in today’s age of modem elec
tronics. Raw vocals are expounded on
this one, coupled with acoustic and
steel guitar, and Wallinger’s specialty:
the piano. While on the verge of being
lyrically obnoxious, this band pulls
together interesting melodies, and
experiments with orchestration in a
wonderfully subtle way.
But back to the moods and
motions! Contrast tracks like “Dance of
the Happy Lads” with “It Can Be
Beautiful” and the moodiness of this
album is astounding. It goes through
the motions with the Dylan thriller,
“Ballad of the Little Man;” pop single,
“Ship of Fools;” and the melody-in
spired title cut, “World Party”.
The disc is truly a spirited
revolution.
R.E.M.
“Document”
I.R.S. Records, Tapes, CDs
Michael Stipe and Pete Buck
have finally released the right document
- one with open lyrics, home-spun
melodies, enriched harmonies, clutch
ing rhythms and powerful imagery;
every bit reflective of their natural sur
roundings.
“Document” is like a picture-
book travel through the band’s long
journey. They grab bits and pieces of
life (the stuff long lours are made of),
while still touching on the sensitivities
that made them college radio’s greatest
possession.
This disc is edgy, but only
rough in the right places. It is easily their
most refined and understandable, even
thought the mystic murr of “Murmur,”
and raging gloom of “Fables” have
faded.
“The Finest Worksong” is the
only R.E.M. original on this one - and
it’s as basic asapairofSOl Blues.“The
End of the World” is their cut-loose
blast, reminiscent of the latest Timbuk 3
(all for fun and fun for all!). The track
“Strange,” is by far the ripest creation -
actually a recreation of an early Wire
tune. Stipe’s vocals shine through here
as harmonious recollections of their past
are uniquely overstated.
The pop success breaking the
band at the moment in album-oriented
rock is the ballad, “The One I Love.”
Here, a stringin’ (and Buckin’) guitar
peirces through just at the right moment
to add that needed punch to Stipe’s
hearty voice.
The rest is a blend of their best
- and still by far the best sounds in
rock’n’roll.
(Editor’s note; Be sure to catch
the band in Durham October 3 and 4.
The dB’s are scheduled to open the
show.
