Robertson a
"hypocrite"
Pat Robertson should
be a lesson to those v^o
feel as if running for
public office under the
guise of religion will
somehow get one the
office. The Rev. Pat
Robertson, if we can tru
ly call him a Reverend,
was shot down recently
for obvious inconsisten
cies in his resume. His
resume stated that he
was:
1. Awarded a medal
for combat duty in the
Korean War.
2. On the board of
directors of an $8.7 mil
lion bank.
3. A graduate of Lon
don University.
Robertson also did
not mention the fact that
in his youthful wayward
ness he conceived his
first son out of wedlock.
Of course to most people
of this corrupt day and
age that would produce no
reaction; however, Ro
bertson used abstinence
before marriage as a
platform to hurtle him
into rvinning for the of
fice of President of the
United States. And for
this reason, Robertson
looks like a hypocrite.
I thoroughly agree. I
believe that Robertson
should be put in the same
league with Jim and Tammy
Bakker. The only true
difference between the
two is that Robertson was
smart enough to marry his
potential Jessica Hahn.
Bravo to Dr. Martin's
South Africa class for
joining the national
Anti-i^artheid Campaign
to Help Unlock ^^>artheid
Jails. They helped col
lect keys and signatures
to be handed in to the
South African Embassy.
This is a gesture of
goodwill and solidarity
with the oppressed black
majority of South Africa.
What do these Anti-
^^rtheid campaigns mean
to the • ordinary black
Now about that resu
me of Robertson's. The
three items above are
conplete untruths about
our illustrious Pat Ro
bertson. First of all,
Pat was not individually
awarded a medal, and it
was not for active combat
duty. Instead, Robertson
was just one of his v^ole
platoon \i^o received
these medals probably
just for being in the
armed forces. It was al
so proven that our brave
Mr. Robertson did not see
actual combat, instead he
was some miles from the
actual fighting. It
seems to me that a person
who lies about being in
combat with an enemy
force would equally lie
about combatting sin,
thus the question raised
is "Is Pat Robertson
really fighting sin or is
he just on the side lines
pretending like he did in
the Korean War?"
Second of all, Ro
bertson proclaims to be
on the board of directors
of a very lucrative Vir
ginia bank. Howeve r,
sources reveal that our
very righteous Mr. Ro
bertson is really on a
very insignificant advi
sory committee in some
far subsidiary of the
bank that he professes to
be on the board of di
rectors of. I think that
vrtien Pat Robertson is on
one of his campaign com
mercials on television,
the cameraperson should
put a little caption un
der Robertson that says
"He's Lying", comparable
to the isuzu commercials.
Lastly, Pat Robert

ency that he graduated

South African? Firstly,
they confirm the abhor
rence of the i^)artheid
system and its injustifi—
able practise. Secondly,
they inspire the deeply
needed hope and assurance
that they are not alone
in the struggle against
inhuman practises. The
campaigns are viewed as a
moral boost and a signi
ficant political solida
rity. To those v^o had a
hand on this campaign, on

On Hunger
Imagine ten children
at a table dividing up
food. The three health
iest fill their plates
with large portions, in
cluding most of the meat,
fish, milk and eggs. They
eat vrhat they want and
discard the leftovers.
Five other children get
just enough to meet their
basic requirements. The
remaining two are left
wanting. One of them
manages to stave off the
feeling of hunger by re
ducing physical and men
tal output, though she is
sickly, nervous, and
apathetic. The other dies
from a virus which he is
too weak to ward off.
These children rep
resent the human family,
and guess v^ich ones re
present us. Last week
25 St. Andrews students
joined hxandreds of Lau-
rinburg residents to walk
the ten kilometer Crop
Walk and earned thousands
of dollars to share with
the rest of sort of good;
we were doing something
to help and it was fun,
but I felt sick when I
saw that Scotland High's
junior ROTC students were
the ones to kick off the
event.
I'm not anti-mili-
tary, but representatives
of the U.S. military had
no business performing
the opening ceremonies
for an event dedicated to
the cause of ending world
hunger. What do you think
the U.S. Marines were
doing "from the halls of
Monteziana to the shores
of Tripoli," handing out
food packets? No, they
people of South Africa,
we say LE KA MOSO, CAMA
RADERIE.
Many people presume
Apartheid is analogous to
the racism practised in
the deep South up to the
early sixties. No, these
two are not exactly the
same; they may be bed
fellows, yes. But Apar
theid goes further than
mere social racism. It
is an instutitionalized
ideological practice and
concept of racism which
legally elevates the sta
tus of the \^ite race ab
ove all other races.
This means the key to
were preserving for U.S.
citizens an -international
system which guaranteed
our bananas and coffee
even if it meant a few
foreigners had to be a
little hungry. Now we
tearfully realize that
there are many people who
are more than "a little
hungry," and many of us
search for ways to help.
The answer lies in that
same system that provides
us with fresh bananas
year round and wonderful
cheap shirts from places
like India and Taiwan,
which means that helping
is much more complicated
than donating yet another
canned good or walking an
extra kilometer in the
Crop Walk.
We help with our
votes. In the next elec
tion we will have a
choice between a large
military budget that the
Democrats are likely to
propose and a very large
military budget that the
Republicans are likely to
propose. In 1984 during
the African famine, Rea
gan asked for a $47 bil
lion more in military
spending to top off a
$231 billion defense bud
get, while announcing a
decrease to $195 million
in our annual contribu
tion to the International
Development Association.
If we vote in 1988 for a
president v^o will divert
just one billion dollars
from defense to develop
ment, we will have saved
the lives of 10 million
children, according to
UNICEF calculations.
Unfortunately, the
oppression is imbedded in
the system much deeper
than is represented by

governmental recognition
and priority is to be
viitiite. Everybody else is
a persona non grata.
Guided by the illu
sions of the Apartheid
principles, the South
African regime decided to
disenfranchise all blacks
in that country. This
means that 80% of the
country's population is
denied the right to vote
for their country's go
vernment, yet the regime
in power is said to be a
'democratic government'.
What a 'democratic'
farce? Those blacks have
