October 29,1987 THE LANCE page S Oldenburg Receives Degree Bonnie Blackburn Dr. Doug Oldenburg, St. An drews trustee for the past 15 years, was on campus last week to receive an honorary St. Andrews degree of a Doctor of Divinity during convocation. He also stopped in and shared with several classes his experiences as a theologian and humani tarian. Oldenburg, who became acquainted with St. Andrews through Dr. Martin, his Davidson college roommate, was recently appointed the President of Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. Dr. Oldenburg shared his thoughts with Dr. Martin’s class on South Africa, since he was a member of the 1982 Ottawa convention of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (W'ARC) which ■ declared that the South African system of apartheid a heresy and that the South African Reformed Churches (which gave theological justification to the system) were to be suspended from any further interaction with the WARC, until such time that the South African Reformed Student Association Budget Approved Nathan West Clubs’ and organizations’ budg ets were apnroved by the Student Life Committee last Thursday, October 15, finally bringing to an end the four week process in which Student Association members determined how the available $39,500 was to allocated to a number of clubs whose requests totaled $66,000. The process started off with the budget proposals being evaluated by the Student Association (SA) Treasurer. Then the budget committee from the Senate began evaluating and having conferences with individual clubs to get a better understanding of the clubs’ budget proposals. After these conferences with the clubs, the budget committee began work ing on the total budget for all of the clubs. With much thought and consideration, the budget committee presented theirbudgetto the full Senate. The Senate evaluated the proposed budget and approved it with an almost unanimous vote; one Senator abstained. With the final approval of Charlie Brown, S A President and the Stu dent Life Committee, the budget was law. Because the total amount of Churches could “in their utterances and practices [give] evidence of a change of heart”. Dr. Oldenburg, although he regret ted cutting the South African churches off from the rest of the WARC, felt that there was no other way to reach them. He feels that the situation in South Africa has reached a stage in which the possibility of peaceful change has almost disappeared. “There is some, but little grounds for hope,” he said, “I feel that it will get worse before it gets better”. Dr. Oldenburg’s main focus of attention, however, is the concept of eco nomic justice. He sees as one of his main quests in his search for religious meaning some way of reconciling the Christian faith with economic justice for all. In 1979, Dr. Oldenburg worked in Haiti with the Committee for Haitian Development on a three-part campaign to try to eradicate some of Haiti’s poverty-stricken popula tion. Over the time he was there. Dr. Oldenburg worked on preventative health care, such as innoculations for children, pre-natal care, and nuU'ition. He also fo cused on education, tryingto raise the level of elementary literacy, as well as putting See Oldenburg, page 12 money requested by the clubs exceeded the amount available by 40 percent, many clubs’ requests were cut by this much and more. In addition, this year we have added three more clubs to our list of charter or ganizations, cutting more into the budget. Another problem that existed and has existed for a very long time is the amount of money from our tuition that goes to the student activity fee. This fee has not in creased in many years though our tuition has increased. This problem has been taken on by the Senate and the Treasurer to increase this fee to parallel our tuition ac cordingly. The money the clubs will receive will be disbursed in the following manner: 50 percent will be allocated in the fall/ winter term and the remaining 50 percent in the spring term. If a club finds itself in need of additional funds for a special event, they can make a formal presentation to the budget committee. “Working with the budget proc ess was difficult. AUofthe clubs have great ideas and plans they want to pursue. However, many of these activities require money that we do not have. So it became very difficult to decide what to cut But the budget committee any myself feel the cuts we have made were reasonable and fair. “I would also like to thank the members of the budget committee: John Newman, Jeff Callahan, Ralph Paradiso, and Ginger Egel for their help in this proc ess. Good luck with your club this year and if you need any help please contact me.” Dr. Doug Oldenburg is congratulated by President A.P. Perkinson Jr. and Dean of Students Tom Ben son on receiving an honorary Doctor of Divinity de gree from St. Andrews.
