Stroud Named All-Americar

Lori Stroud, a senior hitter from
Wilmington, N.C. on the St. Andrews
Presbyterian College, has been named to
the 1987 American Volleyball Coaches
Association NCAA Division III Russell
Athletic All-America (2nd) team.
Stroud has been a powerful
force for St. Andrews, 30-12 and champi
ons of the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference this year, in her four years at
the college. She is the first volleyball player
at St. Andrews to receive All-American
honors, according to head coach Jo Ann
Williams.
“It’s really a great honor for Lori
— looking at the othernames on the hst,
they all come from national powers like na
tional champion University of California
- San Diego,” said Williams. “Lori has
really worked hard for this program her
entire four years here.”
Stroud’s statistics speak for
themselves: she played in 125 games and
had 373 kills with a hitting percentage of
.307. She also had 17 assists, 35 service
aces, 50 passes, 227 digs, 28 solo blocks
and 60 block assists.
“It’s really a great honor for the
volleyball program at St. Andrews and for
Coach Williams,” said Stroud. “I couldn’t
have ever received this honor without ev
eryone else on the team — volleyball is
really a team sport.
“I think this award reflects how
well we played together as a team this
year.”
Stroud was also chosen an All-
South Region performerby the Volleyball
Coaches Association. She was also the
most valuable player of the DIAC Volley
ball Tournament this year, in addition to
being chosen All-Dixie Conference and
Player of the Week earlier in the season.
An education major, Stroud is
a nominee for a CoSIDA/GTE All-
Academic-American award.
Cagers Play in Holiday Tourney

The Knights bounced into action
for the 1988 season with two tournament
games. The first tournament was held at
Oglethorpe College in Atlanta. The var
sity men’s basketball team were the con
solation winners after defeating Shorter
College, 86-73.
Over last week’s Thanksgiving
weekend, the Knights competed at an
other tournament in Virginia. In the first
game, the St. Andrews Knights crushed
Greensboro with a 67-56 win in the first
game. The championship game was even
tually lost, though, after a hard-fought
battle to host Emory and Henry College,
wilh a score of 89-77.
David Simons, a 6’7" junior from
Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, is the team’s lead
ing scorer. For the season total so far he has
already scored a total of sixty-seven
points and has brought down fifty-one
rebounds. Teddy Holloway, a 6’2"
freshman from Shelbyville, Indiana, has
also had a good showing while leading
his team with fifty points and twenty-five
rebounds. Both students were named to
the all-tournament team.
The men’s varsity basketball
captains for this year at St. Andrews are
senior Joe Owens; junior David Simons;
and sophomore, Windell Staton. The
Knights are being coac hed by Mark S imons
and assisted by Mike Elbe.

X-Country Improves

St. Andrews has once again
proved itself by producing a strong cross
country team. This year the team finished
wilh eight men, four women and the
overall performance was an improvement
over last year’s team.
The men’s team runs a race of
8000 meters and freshman Larry Jackson
clocked in with apersonal best of 28:01 for
the season during the recent DIAC Cross
Country Championships held at St. An
drews. Cajetan Chuckwulozie, another
freshman, placed as second runner with a
time of 28:18. Third runner, Chris Wood,
junior, soon followed with 28:21, a mere
three seconds behind Chuckwulozie. Inju
ries playedafactorin this year’s team with
Ernest Musengwa and Alan Abrams out
part of the season. A valiant effort and
a large improvement was shown of Mi
chael Hubbard. Andrew Murphy and Eric
Eubank rounded out the remainder of the
team.
The women’s team, which runs
5000 meters, consisted of Kathy Naylor,
Lisa Chassy, Amy Tilghman, and Tonya
minutes from the season opener.
Coach Gordy Scoles is happy
with the dedicated, hard workers who make
up the team.
“I was pleased with the team’s
progress. They have a long way to go but,
everyone has improved.”
