page 2 THE LANCE March 3,1 Opinion Super Tuesday" promises to be an event not soon forgotten. Invisioned by southern Democrats as a method to nominate a strong regional candidate, the strategy seems to be backfiring. The latest polls show Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis with the lead, followed closely by Rev. Jesse Jackson. Certainly, this is not the idea southern Democrats had when they organized the mega-primary. It seems rather natural for Democrats to be fighting among themselves, but the heat of the Presidential race seems to have eroded the value of the so called 11th Commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican. It is in the spirit of harmony so eloquently demonstrated by the current crop of political candidates, that The Lance encoui ages all students who are registered to vote in Tuesday's primary, to cast their vote for "Undecided," Based on all the information available to us, this is clearly the best candidate. Spnd a message with your vote. Let the political establishment know that you are tired of a system that not only allows, but encourages some of the current candidates to run. Let them know that we are too smart to be fooled by their expensive television commercials and speeches which try to please everyone. We must get the message across now. By November, it will be too late. WSAP Warming Up Frost Cools Off UNC Students Shouldn't Take Rights Lightly WSAP has finally gotten some help. The heat is in the process of being repaired. Not only is the heat being repaired, but we have running water. This is important to the station and really excit ing for us. I wanted to say thank you to Juri Kirs and the staff of the Physical Plant for being patient and getting on the heat prob lem. Thank you, also, to Dean Benson and June Milby for all the help and support they are giving us through this time of radio silence. It’s hard for me to keep my pa tience when something else goes wrong, besides the fact that we are off the air, and I know 1 can offend without realizing it. Without their help, though, we probably would have no chance of making it back on the air. As we get fundraisers going, it would mean a lot if the Sl Andrews com munity would participate actively in the radio station. If anyone has any sugges tions, comments, or spare time, drop me a note: box 142 or Wilmington 209. Jo Frost WSAP Reaganite Pranks Steam Student It would appear that our friends at the University of North Carolina have lost iheir collective minds. That presupposes, of course, that they had minds in the first place. Strange things are happening at the blue-clad campus of the state's flagship university. Treding Water by Buck Tredway Not long ago, several enterprising Caro lina students began circulating a petition. It called for a campus-wide referrendimi to cut off all funding to the school's gay awareness group. UNC and St. Andrews are similar in some respects. One similarity is that all chartered campus organi2ations are eligable to apply for funds generated by the student activity fee. As a chartered organization, The Lance asks for and receives student funding. As a chartered organization on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill, so does the gay awareness group. But it seems that some students think the idea of their money going to such an organi zation might upset their delicate sensabili- ties. A lot of you might not like the idea of your money going to fund this newsp^r, but the dissatisfied students of SL Andrews are acting with much more class than their Chapel Hill counterparts. It is not the purpose of this article to debate the good or evil of homosexual behav ior. I personally fmd the thought of such an act disgusting. I also fmd putting ketchup on your scrambled eggs disgusting, but it doesn't mean Ican'tdeal with youasaperson. VOL. 26 NUMBER 8 TO THE EDITOR: Until thenight(rf2/19,thedoorof Mecklenburg 319 was decorated with various cartoons and quotes, including several pointing out weaknesses in Reagan’s administration and one of the Statue of Liberty with her mouth taped shuL commenting, of course, on curtail ments of First Amendment freedoms. On the night mentioned, there was a “spontaneous gathering” in our suite, and someone saw fit to destroy some of my cartoons and articles. Not indiscriminate drunken destruction, but deliberate destruction, tearing down only the ones they disagreed with— the ones concerning Reagan. And of course the one condemning him, the one of the Statue of Liberty. I must keep this letter restrained so that it will be printed, so I really cannot express adequately the contempt I hold for anyone who would deface another’s per sonal property in this way or who’s response to criticism is destruction. Let me just say that I fmd it appropriate that the First Amemdment Lecture Series begins soon (obviously some people on this campus need the instruction.) Also, to whom it may concern, it is very fitting that you tore off the picture of the Statue, too. Meg Andcison, Eric Eubank, How long do our razor-cut, tumed-up- collar buddies at Blue U. think it will be after they get their anti^gay ordinance passed that people will start trying tostop funding for those organizations represented on those shirts with the funny little Greek letters on them? They wouldn't like it one bit if funding were stopped for the groups whose main activity seems to consist of drinking oceans of beer and throwing up on members of the opposite sex. It would seem that even the simplest of minds could grasp the fact that if you seek to deprive others of their rights, you are asking for your own rights to be violated. I don't think that is what the pseudo-Christian con servative anti-gay Carolina coalition has in mind. On Tuesday,February 23, the "Stopthat. I don't like it" club took time out from their gay bashing and went after the CIA. It would seem appropriate that these students would resent anything having to do with intelli gence. The self-appointed UNC CIA Action Committee intemidated a CIA recruiter right out of town. That's the UNC CIA Action Committee. You know. Thai's the group protesting CIA intemidation« They covered the door of the recruiter's hotel room with red paint and demonstrated outside. When the flustered CIA man left, several of our friendly committee members escorted him out of town, just to make sure he got where he was going. The next thing you know, these people will start circulating petitions to have AIDS victims, drug abusers, foreigners, and any one else they can think of, quarentin^ In stead, why don't we just quarentine the stu dents of UNC-Chapel Hill. At the very least, confined to that picturesque but 19th century village, there is a limit to the damage they can do to American civil liberties.
