Knights' Baseball
Ready for Tough Schedule
They’re all fierce competitors.
Like their coach.
St. Andrews Presbyterian
College’s baseball coach and team are
preparing for a powerful schedule. First
year coach Gary Swanson is making no
predictions, but is putting a lot of pride in
his hard working squad.
The 25-member team represents
10 states and two provinces of Canada.
That’s up from 11 players last year.
Swanson, who coached NCAA
Division I Northern Iowa last year to a 26-
21 record, comes from a program that led
the nation in hitting. The UNI Panthers hit
.354 as a team, including 46 homeruns and
283 RBI’s, under Swanson.
But at Division III St. Andrews,
he’s saying the Knights will not be a power
hitting crew this year.
“We’re really improving in our
hitting, though,” said Swanson. “We
should be able to hit for average and bunt.”
On the mound, Swanson brought
three pitchers with him from Northern
Iowa, who in addition to St. Andrews
returner Sean Hassell, may prove to a
powerful pitching staff.
Mike Gerlach, a 6’2" junior
righthander from Bellevue, Iowa, was 2-0
at Northern Iowa with five saves. He was
third in the nation at Division I for strike
outs per inning last year.
Sophomore Hassell, a 6’0"
righthander from Troy, N.C., was St. An
drews top pitcher last year, with a 7-5
record and an ERA of 3.02.
Other members of the pitching
staff include: Bill Halliburton, a 6’1" so
phomore righthander from Tucson, Ariz.,
who was 3-3 last year at Northern Iowa;
Tim Wilson, a sophomore 6’ 5" righthander
from Colfax, Iowa, who was 3-2 last year
at Northern Iowa; and freshman lefthander
6’0" Tim Whitson from Oscecal, Ind.
“We don’t have enough pitchers
for me,” said Swanson. “But we’re still
going to be a tough, but young, group.”
Two St. Andrews outfield posi
tions should be held by Canadians Tony
Fazzari and Kent Smith. Fazzari is a 5’9"
junior from Thunder Bay, Ontario and
ence coaches.
For the St. Andrews women’s
basketball team, center Malinda Edmonds
was an honorable mention All-Dixie Con
ference selection. She led the Lady
Knights in scoring (15.4 points per game)
and in rebounding (9.5 rebounds per game).
Booters Win Indoor
Tourney
St. Andrews Presbyterian

ing Coker College I-O in three overtimes.
Eleven teams participated in the
all-day tournament, including: Pembroke
State University, Francis Marion College,
Wingate College and USC-Aiken.
St. Andrews, Coker, Francis
Marion and Wingate advanced to the final
round. Coker upset Wingate 3-1, while the
Knights beat Francis Marion 2-0 to ad
vance off of goals from Glenn Garrison
and David Southwood-Smith.
Chris Kosco scored the only
goal for the Knights in the championship
game after two overtimes of scoreless ac-
