Speaks At St. Andrews
Deborah Kelly
The St. Andrew faculty and ad
ministration have announced the continu
ation of the twenty-five $1,000 scholar
ships. The Achievement Scholarships
will be awarded to rising sophmores,
juniors and seniors who have improved
academically since high school and have
made significant contributions to the St.
Andrews community. These awards are
based on merit rather than financial need.
Nine scholarships, released by graduating
seniors, are now available.
Applications can be obtained
from Norman Melvin or faculty advisors.
In addition to the application, faculty
recommendations and a two to three page
essay are needed. All must be handed in
to Norm Melvin by 4 p.m. on April 22.
Semi-finalists may be contacted for an
additional interview. Winners will be
announced around exam time.
As a special addition to the inter
national business class Peter Meijer, for
mer European area manager for Bausch and
Lomb, and Don Reale, manager of interna
tional operations addressed the class on
March 17 and 22 respectively.
In his address, “The Way ItReally
Is”, Meijer described for the students, the
realities of international business — the
good and the bad.
Currently. Meijer handles the
international aspects of Professional
Mailers, a Richmond based firm. He was
born and raised in Holland and graduated
from the University of Amsterdam. In 1955
he came to the United States after receiving
his master’s degree in modem languages
from the Royal Dutch Business Institute.
Following his address, Meijer
attended student project presentations
from members of the sales management
class. His critique of the students’ plans
will serve as a guide for present and future
projects.
During his presentation Reale
explained to the students the difficulties
involved in readjusting when one moves to
a foreign country. He pursued this thought
by stressing the importance of using com
mon sense when living in a foreign country.
Real gave an informal presenta
tion later that evening in the main lounge of
Pate Hall. Those present were given the
opportunity to ask several questions about
life in a foreign country.
Reale, a thirty year veteran of
IBM, joined thecompanyinPoughkeepsie.
NY, when there were only two IBM
manufacturing plants in existance. Mr.
Reale has lived overseas on two occa
sions. From 1964 to 1967 he lived in South
America: mostly in Brazil, Argentina, and
Uruguay. He also lived in Europe for 3
years from 1974 to 1977 at the IBM Paris
Headquarters. After 13IBMmoves,Reale
settled in Raleigh 12 years ago.
The international class will
round off the semester’s activities with a
tour of the IBM Raleigh facility. Several
students in the class will also participate
in the upcoming “Internationa Week”
being sponsored by the International
Students Club.
Surpasses Expec
tations
Carolyn Moore
Dan Mohn, Director of Devel
opment, has announced the conclusion of
the volunteer solicitation phase of the Lau-
rinburg Area Campaign for St. Andrews
with a total of $176,566.
The campaign began on February
12 with the goal set at $159,000. This
year’s gifts and pledges have already sur
passed last year’s total and there are still
fifty days remaining in the 1987-88 fiscal
year.
The Laurinburg Area Campaign
has shown a two-year growth of 51 %. This
increase is a result of a two-year challenge
issued by First Union National Bank to St.
Andrews in December of 1986. First
Union challenged local gift totals to in
crease by ten percent each year with the
“benchmark” total being $100,434 from
May of 1986.
The First Union challenge has
been met and surpassed. Cash and gifts-in-
kind to date, including large gifts, total
362.411.
Tami Geiger. Assistant Director
of the Annual Fund and coordinator of the
Laurinburg Area Campaign, said “It is nice
to see the community taking interest in St.
Andrews again in terms of financial sup
port. This is the first time since 1958 that
Laurinburg has struggled to help St. An
drews.”
Laurinbucrg citizens showed
strong support back in 1958 to establish St
Andrews in this town but since then support
has declined until now. ,
“The situauon of St. Andrews m
Laurinburg has made a circle. First, the
town struggled to get St. Andrews, second,
it struggled to keep it, and now it is making
an effort to support it,” Geiger said.
