anything but heterosexual, whether they
feared peer pressure or the ratio was
inaccurate. “I don’t personally agree or
condone this lifestyle, but I respect their
opinions. Most people took those signs as
a joke. At least it is now out in the open and
not through a network. Their not hiding
this particular lifestyle is rather risky.
They may be opening themselves up for
persecution.”
Already some form of persecution
has begun. The individual whose tele
phone number was listed on the flyer has
received some negative feedback. “I
received crude calls from male students,
some were obscene and others hung up or
demanded to know who was behind this.
There was however some slight positive
feedback,” they said.
The person whose box number
was listed reported no repercussions or
feedback.
A computer box number under
HUMANALITY was set up before the
posters made their appearance. It was
designed for students with computer boxes
to be another medium of information.
“I had a somewhat fear of expo
sure,” an organizer of the computer box
stated, “I wouldn’t deny it, but I wouldn’t
stand up and proclaim it either.”
Some students noted that the tak
ing down of the posters was a direct viola
tion of rights and an infringement of free
speech. One student went so far as to say,
“It is tacky. Those who took them down
should face Honor Court or Honor Court
charges. They have a right like anyone
else.”
Two years ago members of the
“Social Issues” class tried an experiment to
measure the degree of campus homopho
bia. Their experiment was based on a “IF
YOU ARE GAY, WEAR BLUE JEANS
TODAY” campaign that was first intro
duced at the University of Illinois. Posters
advertising this were ripped down or
answered with responding posters.
Though there was no noticeable change in
the dress code, students in the religion
class who monitored jean wearers on the
test date noted that fewer men wore jeans
than on a previous date.
Other colleges who tried this
same experiment were not as fortunate.
Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania had
fi^t members who wore suits and burned
a pair of jeans in protest. Rutgers
University violence went a step further.
Their form of protest included a hanging of
a gay individual.
Is now the appropriate time to
raise the consciousness of the St. Andrews
campus? “No time is the appropriate time
for radical social reform. People would
rather have things stay the way they are,”
one member of the core group said.

Within the next few years, the

an activity fee based on a fixed amount of
one percent of the total tuition, room, and

proposal was not cited in the letter to the

for the budget to increase proportionally if
the school had to raise tuition in order to
survive a changing economy in the neat
