Opinion To the Members of the Student Body: Holding Hands With That Person? ...That was really gross, totally uncalled for and so unnatural! Holding hands with that...that person...Do you have no pride in yourself? No self respect for who you are? Do you not care what my friends would think of you if they saw you? They might shun me because I know you and enjoy our friendship; even with your sU'ange preferences... Did you really want to kiss that..-that person...? They’re not the type of person I think you should kiss. They’re not even the type ofpersonllike. They’re so different from me and their practices seem so strange. Why do you have to be so different from me and deviate from what I think is right for you? Why would you want to kiss a person of the opposite sex?? - a gay answer to the same ques tion of a straight friend Anonymous I would like to take this opportu nity to thank everyone who has been in volved in the College Christian Union this year. Many projects have been accom plished through hard work done on a volunteer basis by our Council and many others. I encourage everyone to continue working to keep the College Christian Union an active organization. Particularly, I congratulate Char lene Carpenter, who has been elected President for the 1988-1989 school year. Good luck Charlene—your hard work has paid off.!!! Lastly, I salute Bob Martin and Shirley Arnold for their work as our advi sors. They have taken time out of akeady too-busy schedules to help us. Thanks again to everyone in volved this year (Addie, Bill, Charlene, Margaret, Randa, Terrie, and of course, Howard.) You have made my year as President of the greatest!!!!!! Sincerely, Michelle Taylor CCU President, 1987-88 Dear Editor, Pink Paper Caper This is in reference to the article on the Pink Paper Caper. I have only one comment other than I was happy to finally see something positive on the subject in the Lance. (Personally I think that some of the things that some heterosexual couples do are gross, especially on the couch of certain suite lounges, but I can deal with them too.) Maybe the Lance left it out or the Sl Andrews staff member did not state it, but just what is a better way of getting this information out (i.e. aboutthe gay/bisexual group) to the campus if not through posters, a mail box, a phone number and a computer mailbox? Just what is left? Would the staff member please tell the core group what is a ‘better’ way? (If the Lance left this information out, please put it into print in this issue.) Or was this ‘better way’ by not being so public on the subject, and by hiding the information in P.O. Boxes and under doors? Did the sight of posters on the walls of the LA building strike a nerve? Let’s have the ‘better way’ Sharon L. Fields To :Mi Amigito Asustado To the Editor: On April 18, a semi-literate, bilingual member of the college commu nity left a note on the bulletin board where I have displayed some Spanish materials. The note reads “ NO! Una lengua por uno [sic] pais-ingles [sic]!” [“No! One lan guage for an [sic] country- the [sic] Eng lish!”] They left the note on top of an article entitled “Espanol - Una lengua con futuro enlosEE.UU.” (Literal u-anslation: “Spanish - A Language with a Future in the U.S.”) A more accurate translation is on the other side of the bulletin board where it reads: ‘Spanish, the Number One Foreign Language in the U.S.” Ridge (1980) has noted that some people in this country suffer fn>m a foreign language hysteria which makes them distrustful of anyone using any language other than English. “Until recent times, perhaps the United States has been the only coimtry in which to speak two languages was a mark of low status” (Stewart, 1972, p. 27) It is my hope that whoever wrote this note will be able to overcome their xenophobic attitude and discover the absolute joy of being a fully literate, bilingual person. The innocuous bulletin board is not the beginning of an attempt to undermine the use of the English language in this country or even in this school; it is just one more reminder that there are other ways of expressing oneself, other ways of seeing the world than through the English language. One of the goals of foreign language teaching in any country has to be to develop intercultural aware ness, that is, “self acceptance, acceptance of one’s own culture and the acceptance of other cultures” in all students (Herman, 1974, p. 8). If we want to know how well we are developing intercultural awareness in this country, all we need to do is to ask ourselves when the last time was we asked one of the inter-national students about theirexperience among us. Did we listen to what they said with an open mind, trying to see things as they saw them, or did we get defensive? Ask them! Happy language learning, especially to you, “mi amigito asustado”. Ray Frink Bonnie says Bye-Bye Well, it’s that time of year—sen iors are trying to find the words to say good bye to St. A. I myselfam having a hard time even comprehending the fact that it is time to move on, time to let someone else take over and continue the Lance “mission”, whatever that may be. I, along with Dave and Buck, started out this year on very shaky ground. When we all arrivedin September, wewere faced with the task of making the Lance a “real” college newspaper, rather than the joke it had become in recent years. It was rough. We were met with a lot of opposi tion to our idealistic goals for the Lance. However, once we proved we were serious, things got a little easier (that is, wegotkeys to the Lance office in LAI). After a lot of hassles, we were able to get some of the equipment we needed to make a newspaper happen. I’m not blaming the administra tion, after all, it had been years since a serious newspaper had been a part of the St. Andrews experience. However, things could have been a lot easier on us if we had had the support of the administration from the beginning. June Milby of the Communica tions office is the one exception to our opposition. She helped us out in getting our supplies and let Joann Bellavia do our type setting on her machines. That was instru mental in the Lance’s survival this year. She also provided us with support when we were at our lowest points in morale. I wish that next year’s Lance staff can continue what Dave, Buck, and I tried to start this past year. I hope also that the lack of administrative support we encoun tered will not affect next year’s staff in the way it did for us. The Lance can be a very effective vehicle for airing student con cerns, and it is time that the administration realizes that Good luck to all involved in the production, and to all those students whose time and effort andconcern make the Lance the newspaper it is today, and the one it can be in the future.
