October 5, 1988 THE LANCE pages Sports New Season-St.Andrews Women's Volleyball S.A. Sports Notes Mark Powell Communications Office The St. Andrews Presbyterian Col lege women’s volleyball team started their entry into the NAIA the best possible way- going undefeated in their first irtne outings. With decisive victories over Colum bia, Belmont-Abbey, Elon, High Point and Wingate, Methodist, Pembroke State, the Lady Knights have compiled a 7-0 record in the Carolinas Conference and a 14-4 overall record. Last year their final record was 32-12 jn the NCAA Division Ill’s Dixie Conference. Led by head coach Kelly Bangs, the Coots (an affectionate campus nickname for the team) have one main goal for this season. That is to “win it for Coach.” Jo Ann Williams, the St. Andrews volleyball since 1972 (with 259 wins at the college) will miss the season due to illness. “It is very important to keep in mind what our goal really is,” said Bangs. The team looks for strong leader ship from co-captains Kristi Kluegel and LornaBiagioli. Kluegel, a six-footer from Kn oxville, Tenn., is the lone senior on the team. Biagioli is a 5’ 10" junior from Baldwin, N.Y. A strong hitter, Kluegel is also a very effeclive backrow hitter. Last year she was All-Dixie Conference, All-DIAC Tourna ment and All-South for the NCAA Division 111. Biagioli also has strong hitting abil ity as well as strong serve. With only three freshmen on the team, Bangs returned to comf>etition this year with seven sophomores and three juniors.Bangs also hopes that Tomoko Yoshida, a 5’3” freshman from Yokahama Japan, will be a key to the back row defense of the team when she is able to play. Angie Brown, a freshman from Wa terloo, Iowa, has made a strong, immediate impact on the team. Brown is a 5’7" hitter. Bangs is working with the team to reduce the number of service errors and main tain good passing skills, “most of the girls pass real well and that is something we work on all the time. I’m also seeing the results of the quick feet drills and running,” that have been added this year. Conditioning and maintaining a good attitude will be key in their busy and well traveled schedule as they strive to “win it for Coach.” Eric Eubank Equestrians off to a Jumping Start Pam Whitfield Southern Pines hosted the St. An drews Benefit Horse Show September 24 and 25. I I I i * Many things have happened in St. Andrews Athletics this year. Unfortunately few of these things have been covered by Lance reporters. If you are interested in writing sports related articles for the Lance please contact Eric Eubank at Ex.467, or Box 571, or in person, or whatever. There are too many athletes, and athletic evenus that go uncovered by the Lance. If you want to help, then write, please. With that short note out of the way, on to Sports. Coots mania is back at St. An drews. The Women's Volleyball team is cur rently 7-0 in the Carolinas Conference and is playing exU"emely well. Kristi Kluegle was recently named NAIA District 26 Player-of-the-Weck and National Player of the Week, the very first person to win that award. Congratulations Kristi, and to the whole team for your excellent play. Men’s Soccer is now 1-5-2 >n the year. The Knights next home mati! is on October 4 against Pembroke. Women’s Soccer, a new spo^i at St. Andrews, lost their debut to Guilford -0, but won a recent match against MaryvillcCi illege. It would be nice to show our support of the Lady Knights, by turning out in large masses for the opening home match on Octo ber 6 against Elon. The Men’s Cross-Country Team fin ished second to Pfeiffer at the Belmont-Abbey Invitational. Eric Eubank finished third over all to lead the Knights to their second place finish. Cathy Naylor finshed second overall in the women’s meet. Trainer Eddie Melvin is looking fora few good student assistants. If you think you qualify, you can contact him at Ex. 385, or at the Training Room. Lastly an apology to the sports that were left out. The athletes of St. Andrews work hiird. They deserve better coverage tlian this. If you wish to make a difference in the quality of sporus coverage, remember the Lance is a student run newspaper. The change promises to provide high quality competitions for the team. The IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) team competes first at Averett College in Danville, Va. on October 14. Riders participating in the ANRC (American National Riding Commission) team are sched uled to attend clinics, aiding in Training Squad selections. The focus of those selected will be preparation for regional and national competi tions in the spring. Schilling's Au *o Brokers FULL SERVICE AUTO SHOP SPECIAL DISCOUNTS FOR SA. STUDENTS!!
