November 3, 1988 THE LANCE P*g*3 Gender/Color Blind Short Quiz: How many full professors here at St. Andrews are female? Black? How many science professors are black? Female? How many nonsecretarial positions in the administration are filled by women? How many secretaries are men or blacks? What minorities are represented on the admissions staff? 0 iO-e n Jo ‘0 ‘Z :sj3Msuv If you answered all of the ques tions right, you did well. However, many of you will tell me that you are color and gender blind and do not notice such things. Wrong. You do not notice because the numbers are so low. This form of discrimination is very harmful, because one can profess egalitarian principles while ignoring reality. One example of how this dis crimination works is in the recent CUB trip to choose bands for school events. The Black Student Union had asked to send a repre- sentative with them, but the reques( was not acknowledged until the last available ticket had been given out. When the bus left, carrying those with tickets, there were at least two' iOi Mary Griggs empty seats and no members of the BSU were present. Making those who are different invisible is one hold over from the caste system we don’t need. No human should be reduced to the status of “non-person” because of their race, color, or sex. In the words of Yaweh, “Open your eyes that you may see!” Look around you at the number of women and minorities that are in positions of authority. Try to count the number that are included in alleged “equal opportunity.” It is not a matter of "add women or blacks and stir”— it is a matter of a conscious decision to affirm the dignity and potentiality of all humankind. Blotter is an Embarrassment Dear Editor, I would like to express a few words concerning the “Campus Security Blotter” that came out in the month of September. The blotter was divided into the follow ing sections: Larceny, Vandalism, Bike Theft, Alcohol, Trespass/Un authorized Individuals, Fireworks Violation, Drug Violation, and Other Items of Interest. I do agree that some of the information presented in the blotter was very informative for students. The only concern I had was on the very last section of the blotter. Campaign Shorts National Republican Headquarters recently overwhelmed the St. Andrews community with their generous supply of campaign propaganda for the upcoming election. The Bush-Quayle ticket supporters enclosed a brief note among the treasured goods that reads as follows: "Enclosed is the material you requested. We appreciate your interest in the Bush- Quayle '88 campaign and look foward to your continued support and involvement. If you need additional material or information or would like to take a more active part in the campaign, please contact your state Victory '88 office." What materials may you ask that were encbsed? Two tin buttons, one paper button, one bumper sticker and one auto graphed photo of George Bush suitable for framing. Is this an in dication of how the next four years are going to be like in the oval office. Isn't this a bit premature to start tightening the ol' bell? Quote Ron Bayes, "The picture will get hung up in ihe office if he gets to be president, otherwise in the trash can it goes." George, your unfailing generosity will not soon be forgotten on this campus. Deborah Kdly eVeryone must t^injc /ourC tcif. theyre, already pra/fn9 “Other Items of Interest,” where it reads, “Wheel chair student had an accident and ran into the lake. Was helped out by Physical Plant per sonnel.” Why don’t they just go right out and name the individual? I would also like to add that I felt the majority of the “Blotter” was an embarassment. Although the “Blotter” had some good inten tions, it turned out to be an outland ish summary of the security problems the campus is experienc ing.
