Tri-Beta Update Lisa Chassy Tri Beta is a biological honor society, and Tau Rho is St. Andrews’ chapter.Membership in the society is determined by academic achievement and interest in the pursuit of biological knowlege. Two of the main goals of Tri- Beta at St. Andrews are reseach and the dissemation of biological knowlege. This column will serve the latter function by letting the campus know what Tri-Beta has been doing. The past month has been very busy for Tri-Beta. Members have been participat ing in a biomass study of the lake, analyz ing water quality to types of invertebrates in the mud. Tri-Beta's next project is to replace the Dogwood trees along Dogwood Mile. According to Norm Melvin, the primary reason for the death of the uees has been the damage at the base of the trees due to lawnmowers. The maintenance crew has been more careful but the damage is long term. Other damages to the trees have oc curred from the lack of rain during the spring and summer, cars and vandalism by carving initials and names into the bark. It is estimated that about 70 trees will be necessary. Any groups on campus interested in helping restore trees to Dogwood Mile are urged to contact one of Tri-Beta’s officers. Although it would be great to see the trees in place this year, it is likely that the project will not be com pleted until next year. The other major activity Tri-Beta recently completed was the induction of associate members. Associate members are normally sopho mores who have declared a major in Biology, good academic standing, and interest in participating in Biological research. Mwill be willing to be active as a member. A student unwilling to partici pate in this fun is unlikely to want to help out with research. Since Tri-Beta is a re search organization, it must make sure all members will lend a hand when needed. Tri-Beta is happy to say that all prospec tive members are now officially associate members. In the spring, these members will be eligible for active membership. MISSING: Opus He's about (these are estimations) 2ft. tall and weighs 4 lbs. There is a reward but remember, I am a poor college student. And, Mr. "Phantom" if you are reading... You are a scum-sucking vagrant! I miss you. Opus. Signed a very perturbed, Heidi P. How Big Was It? Ernest Musengwa There have been many incidents when this question was asked on campus. “How big was it?” Someone just arriving, or overhearing the conversation asks, “What is it you are talking about?” Cockroaches. They are all over campus. I have never seen a roach as big as the one that I saw in my room. The complaint about roaches was lodged during the first forum. When the President responded to the complaint, he made it clear that it is the Physical Plant’s duty to take care of that problem. It has been a while since the forum was held, and you would think that the problem had been taken care of, but there are still cock roaches in the dorms. When The Lance consulted Juri Kris, the director of the Physical Plant on the issue, he said that the Residence Halls are exterminated during the vacations when there are no students present. Further extermination may be made within twenty-four days if a complaint is lodged. To register a complaint, the students need to go to their Residence Director, and he or she will fill out a “job card.” Through the relevant filing of complaints, the big , fat, and disease carrying roaches can be done away with.
