Education Update
with Charlie Mingus
The Education Department welcomes all stu
dents, both returning and new students on campus.
The Education Department is located in the LA
Building near the Language Arts Center, Room
201. The Language Arts is for not only education
majors but all students. The Center is a convienent
and comfortable place to study and students are
encouraged to use it.
The Language Arts Center works with the SAGE
program on writing skills. Students who need help
on their papers are able to take advantage of the
opportunity. Writing skills can be improved by:
helping organize your paper, generate new
ideas, identify taboo errors and other problems you
have with writing.
The Language Arts Center is open from 8:30
a.m. to 9 p.m. during weekdays and 2 p.m. to 4
p.m. on weekends.
The Education Department has developed and
maintained its reputation to be amongst the leaders
in innovating the educational systems in the
Southeastern United States. The Teacher Educa
tion Program at St. Andrews has been recendy
revised to cope with the winds of change. The
program is based on a foundation of how students
live and learn in organizations, i.e. schools. What
do we know about how humans think, listen,
speak, and read? How do we teach these skills?
Student teachers explore all this and other ques
tions through interactive discussion, field study,
study abroad, research and student teaching.
Teachers are in demand and there are numerous
programs that offer financial aid up to $5,000 per
year for education students. Scholarships available
through the Education Department include the
Teaching Fellowship Scholarship, Edith Bullock
Memorial Scholarship, and Delta Kappa Gamma
Scholarship.
There is also an Education Club and SNCAE
which offers students opportunities to have direct
interaction with other teachers who are in the
teaching field from all over the state. This past
month students went to Hilton Head Island, S.C. to
meet with other college students. The club spon-
soed the trip free of charge. For more information
about the Education Club contact Addie Alford or
Randa Richards.
Co-Hab Incident Causes
Community Friction
To the Editor,
I was annoyed to be inconvenienced a few weeks
ago on a Monday night when my suite had to meet
with Dean Greer. I was appalled when I found out it
was because one of our own suitemates had gone to
the Dean.
The week before, two minors from town were found
sleeping in a suitemate's room by her roommate. I met
this roommate, the accuser for the first time on the
night of the meeting.
This woman on finding the two boys in her room,
called security and Dean Greer without waking her
roommate. The two boys were held for questioning
and barred from campus. The woman accused of co-
habitadng is to stand before Honor Court.
What bothers me is not the barrage of accusations
being made: drug use, parental abuse, and co-habita-
tion among them, but the fact that someone who is a
suitemate if not in fact skipped all lines of authority to
tattle on her roommate. The suiteleader, dorm presi
dent and the residence director were not notified of the
incident. Instead Dean Greer and her guards were
given complete control of the situation.
The worst part of the whole occurrence is the feeling
of having been violated. I am secure in the knowledge
that I could go to any of my suitemates for help.
Suddenly a problem arises in our community, and
istead of being allowed to to solve it ourselves, one of
our own took the situation outside. We never had the
chance to solve it ourselves. The other disturbing part
of the incident is the fact that it was made known to
the Dean that the accuser was co-habiting herself and
she was allowed to go blameless while her roommate
and three other girls who became embroiled in this
must stand before the Honor Court. Rules are broken
every day. I agree that it is the duty of the students to
help solve them. But when we cannot even try to first
talk it among ourselves, we have lost our sense of
community, and our dorms truly have become resi
dence halls.
