February 23, 1989 The Lance Page 15 Alumnus Becomes Men's Tennis Coach cB Michael Roberts David Saltman and the men's tennis team play at Catawba on Saturday. IHSA Horseshow at Singingwood Farm Bob Bierbaum, a 1981 graduate of St. Andrews , has been named as the new coach of the men’s tennis team. While at St. Andrews, Bierbaum was a second team All-Conference soccer player. • "The best part about coaching a college tennis team is that it’s fun. It's great to be around people who take the game seriously and enjoy playing it," said Bierbaum. Bierbaum has recently coached soccer and tennis at Scotland County High School. He coached the boys' soccer team for six seasons, and the boys' tennis team for two seasons. During his second year of coaching tennis, Bierbaum led the Scots to an undefeated season and a Regional Championship. He is currently on the Executive Board of the Scotland County Tennis Associa tion, and works with organizing tournaments. "1 got involved with tennis only three or four years ago," he said, "as a result of a knee injury. But now I'm concerned with getting my family and the community involved in the sport." The difference between coaching high school and coaching at the college level is the level of maturity of the players," said Bierbaum. The players are all hard-working and positive, whereas high school coach ing was more like baby-sitting," he said He added that the worse part so far has been the challenge of ordering for the team and scheduling. Bier- baum admits that taking over the reins of a team that includes an All-Ameri can was somewhat intimidating. "Greg (Dorsey) knows much better than 1 do what is good for him, and what his strengths and weaknesses are. He has a very good work ethic, and is a positive influence and role model for the other players," he said. Although he is officially the coach of the Lady Knights also, the coaching responsibilities have been assumed by Dawn Langley. Bierbaum stated that he thought of Langley as a great coach and a great motivator. He also added that one has to admire her "positive quality." Bierbaum also stated that his official position as • coach of the Lady Knights was only temporary. "The girls were in a spot, and Dawn decided to accept the challenge. 1 know she’ll do a good job," he said. When asked what his goals were for the upcoming season, Bierbaum commented, "Tennis is much more than just your won-loss record. My goal is to motivate the players to play their best tennis and to aW/ays give it their best shot. I want to learn more about the game personally, and to learn how to motivate these players to get the best of themselves." He also added that he wants to work hard to continue the tradition of success left to him by former coach Drew Sledge, and commented that Sledge had done an outstanding job. Bierbaum is a seventh grade English teacher. He is married, has a nine teen-month-old daughter, and is expecting another child in July. "I had to have a doubles team!" he laughed.
