February 23, 1989 The Lance Page 3 WSAP Coming Soon! Dear Editor, Just a little note to let everyone know what Is going on with the radio station. WSAP went off the air last spring due to equip ment failures. In fact, we struggled throughout the last academic year with an old soundboard which had burned out when it was struck by lightning. There was no money availible to buy the neces sary equipment, so we used toothpaste for the wires and tried to make do. Dan Tanner has been instrumental in getting us back on the air. For the second time, he has completely rewired the studio for our return to 91.1 FM. Now, we are waiting for the phone company to hook us up. This may take a while, but we are ready to go when they do so. WSAP has a fresh crop of DJ's to spin tunes and bend you ears with your favorite type of music. We will have shows like "College Media Journal" Top 40 countdown on Monday evenings with Jay Bumgarner, a Sunday evening jazz show with Jason Rich, morning talk shows, and general music mixes. There will definitly be something for everyone. We still need DJ's for Friday nights and on the weekends. There are no prerequisites for being a DJ, people can come in together to do a show, or alone and play music. If you are interested in becoming one of us, contact Jo Frost at ext. 472 or Chad Esposito at ext. 496. When WSAP does go back on the air we will be on from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. every night. We would love to have you come out and try it. Last week, we had WSAP night at the Gather ing Place and v/e gave away records, tapes, CD's, and posters to lucky winners. We will be giving away records regularly once we get back on the air. People can call in to get Bruce Spring steen, Run DMC, the Cynics, and many others during our give-aways. There will be notices around campus when your radio station, WSAP FM 91.1 returns to the airways. All you have to do to receive us in the privacy of your own room is hook up your stereo to your cable outlet (you'll also be able to pick up a lot more stations this way). We will be on the air soon. Don't forget to listen for us! Jo Frost The Lance conflnues fo mainfGin an ediforiQl pof-. Icy fhof we will only prinf signed submissions. Ncimes will be wlf inheld upon re quest. TriBeta Update with Teresa Tadaian &Margaret Currie You may not know it, but Tri-Beta has been conducting major scientific research in Morgan Jones for the past few months. The research is headed by Tri-Beta Charter Member Brian Her bert. The project deals with the brown adipose or fatty tissues of mammals. This tissue is thought to be an aid in warming the body of typical and hibernating animals during cold conditions by speeding up the body's metabolism. To measure the increase in metabolism caused by the brown adipose tissue, Herbert with help from several Tri-Beta members, monitored the oxygen intake of test subjects under simulated warm and cool conditions. The results of this preliminary experi ment should be completed by early March, lead ing to further research on why this phenomena occurs. After tabulating the results, Herbert hopes to submit a paper on this experiment for publication in BIOS, the Tri-Beta Journal and other biological journals. Publication of this re search could benefit St. Andrews by encouraging further support of alumni for the science depart- ment. Since its chartering in May of '87, the Tao-Rho chapter of Tri-Beta has tried to promote further undergraduate research in the various sciences. Current Tri-Beta Members are not only involved in the study of the brown adipose tissue of mam mals, but also in the ecology of the St. Andrews community. Long-range studies are being con ducted on the lake and surrounding wildlife pou- lations. Tri-Beta hopes that experiments like these will be continued over the years by current and future members.
