Learning Self Defense is
Matter of Life or Death
On February 15 and 16, the St.
Andrews Campus Police sponsored a
self defense class for interested
female students. Lt Ronald Wagner, of
the Laurinburg Police Department,
conducted the two sessions. About 17
students in all took advantage of the
opportunity to talk with a police officer
about how to deal with an attempted
assault.
Lt Wagner concentrated on common
sense tips on avoiding potentially
dangerous situations, h/lany women
are assaulted by not thinking; being
aware of the surroundings could go a
long way in saving someones life. By
taking regular precautions, like check
ing the back seat of the car before
getting in or wearing nonrestrictive
clothing when walking at night, a
person can keep themself from being
a target.
l^/lost people carry plenty of weapons
on their person at all times. Keys,
pens, handbags, and the body itself
can all be used for defense. If ever
someone is involved in an attempted
rape, the key is to stay calm. When a
situation becomes dangerous, begin to
look for openings and have enough
self-esteem to take advantage of it. Lt
Wagner says. "Would you rather be
tried by 12 or carried by 6? You must
think, 'will I kill him or let him rape me
and walk off,' the decision is yours." If
the rape does occur, Lt Wagner
reccomends that the woman try to
mark the assailent. "Get some of his
flesh under your nails," he says,"do
not take a bath until a doctor has ex
amined you."
In many of the rapes that do occur
the woman knows her attacker. In
these sort of situations it is wise if the
woman knows herself. She should
know the limits that she has, and she
should not feel guilty at>out saying "no"
and getting out of an uncomfortable
Mary Griggs
situation. Many women are ashamed
of being raped, and so they keep silent
about it. They should remember that
unless the rapist is stopped, the crime
will occur again.
Lt. Wagner, who has 16 years
experience in law enforcement,
believes that women should talk to
one another and share information. He
believes that common sense is the
next best thing to proper technique. Lt
Wagner is willing to invest his time in
structing students about correct holds,
throws, and mental attitude if there is
interest on campus for it. Any person
desiring more information should get
in touch with Chief of Security Therion,
Young. Assault is a violation of a
person's rights. Self defense and
personal security are the most impor
tant things in proctecting oneself.
