March 9, 1 989 The Lance Page 3 Dear Editor, I was informed by a very reliable source that over Christmas break, 27 laboratory animals died due to a lack of adequate food and water. Upon talking to the professor in charge of the animal laboratory. Dr. Dennis McCracken, I was told that he had not been aware of this, but that he would look into it. Without indicating who my informant was, I can personally vouch for his/her integrity, as well as assure you that he/she is in almost daily contact with the animal lab. There is no other reason for this person to have sought me out other than in the hope that I would do something for this. They had no reason to lie. Nothing can be done about the animals that died over the break, whatever their number, but we can work to make sure that this situation does not arise again. Spring break is coming up and the animals must be attended to. I encourage you to talk to your science and psychology professors about your concerns. I'm sure Dr McCraken would be interested in speaking with con cerned students, as well. St Andrews prides itself on being a research institution and thus, has a responsibility to these animals to provide adequate food and water. If anyone is interested in becoming more involved with Animal Rights in general, please feel free to contact me at Ext. 478 or my home phone 268-4488. Phyllis Dunaway Opinion Audacious Junk with Janice Young On the evening of Saturday, February 25, set forth with a friend in the direction of Farrago. There was a BSD party taking place, and once arrived, I dug into my pock ets for the two dollar cover charge. That taken care of, I wandered in, and was greeted by the sight of dancing people. I felt a sudden urge to become one of them, so my friend and I hit the floor. After dancing to a few tunes, we decided to rest until what one of us deemed a good song came on. Alas, that long awaited moment never came. I decided to make a request, and the deejays said that they would "try" to play it. Try? After a while, I asked again, and then again, and eventually sent three other people to ask as well. These types of par ties are for everyone on campus, so why was our request ignored? I personally saw the song I wanted to hear in their box of tapes. It wouldn't have been a problem. The party was dominated by rap music, and I was a paying customer. I feel my request should have been respected. The song 1 wanted to hear was "Running" from Information Society. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it is a freestyle song that is neither long, nor deemed unholy by the P.M.R.C. Instead, it is a song that is easy to dance to, and happens to be the one I wanted to hear. 1 intend to attend another BSD party next year, as rumor has it that this was this year's last. But if it is again rap dominated, I shall leave and never attend another. I m not paying to go anywhere that someone ex pects one to listen to their music, but will not listen to yours. The deejays seemed to enjoy what they were playing, though 1 wonder if anybody else did. TriBeta Update with Teresa Tadalan &l\/largaret Currie This semester, Tri-Beta members have added bird watching to their list of springtime activities. At Che raw State Park, approxi mately 80 miles east of St. Andrews, an endangered species of woodpecker has recently been discovered on the park's 7,000 acres of woodland. In order to keep a record of the growth and spread of this species, the South Carolina Heritage Trust has asked St. Andrews Tri-Beta and Health/Science Club members to participate in a population count of the Red Cockaded Woodpecker for an environmental impact study. The project will con sist of walking through assigned areas of the park searching for the nesting sites of the Red Cockaded found. Minor details have yet to be finalized before students can begin work. In other news, Tri-Beta is offering a tutoring service to anyone who needs help in the fields of science and/or mathematics. If you are interested, please sign up on one of the posters in Belk, Morgan-Jones, or the LA building, or contact Chuck Corley at ext. 464. DID YOU KNOW?!!! - that the distance from the bridge of your nose to your chin Is equal to the distance from the outside corner of each eye to the baci of your ear? - That the vast majority of DNA mutations are caused by the action of water on DNA molecules? — IFrom the Editor'5 DeSk I would like to take this opportunity to commend Howard Hall and those stu dents who were Involved In the presentatlor and organization of the student forum that took place on March 1. What could have been a screaming match and roasting of administrative officials turned out to be an orderly airing of legitimate gripes. A forum ( this nature was a timely event, especially o a campus that revolves around rumours anc heresay. One student a‘t the forum mentioned the fact that now that suggestions have been made to rectify certain "unconstitutional violations", what Is the time limit for these changes and what Is the next step if these changes aren't dealt with? The forum made Its point, now it is up to us to act. As Presi dent Hall stated at the forum, w® J’®/® "rights, power and responsibility. Now lets use it. DLK ;
