March 9,1989 The Lance Page 9 Foium continued from page 8 time for a policy because it affects us ail," he said. President Howard Hall clarified this issue by stating that a number number of modif ications were made on the policy but not voted on by the entire faculty. The policy would be decided at the next faculty meeting. A1 Schilling declared that accord ing to the 1986-87 Saltire, it is a students choice of whether to be tried by the Dean or public and private hearings. Anything that infringed upon this was a "consti tutional violation." Pete Rich was asked if the RA position would affect the suite leader's position. Although he says he does not support the switch to RAs, Rich did not believe that it would effect suite leaders because this system has worked in some schools. Vice-President Wendy Phillips added to this by saying that according to Dean Greer, RDs had asked for some kind of assistance. She said there is talk of discontinuing RDs or having 2 or 3 dorms under one RD. An RD/student present at the forum countered this, "We did not ask for RAs. Dean Greer told us and that was that," they said. On an entirely different topic not presented by the speakers, Bently Crabtree said that the Dean's being informed by Scotland County Memorial of those stu dents who received treatment was "none of her business." Darin Lawrence supported that statement, "That is a violation of the Medical Privacy Act. Unless a person is under 18, no one should be contacted unless told to." The rumors concerning Dean Greer's involvement with Jim's Drive-In were put to an end. The official story was released to Lisa Rich by Student Activities Coordinator Glenn Harrison. According to Harrison, Me Coll officials called the Dean asking for funds to help "clean-up" the alcohol problem in their town. Dean Greer told the officials that she did not feel obliged to contrib ute because establishments like Jim's were contributing to the alcohol problem on campus. The person she talked to suggested that she write a letter to the mayor of Me Coll which she later did. Students were urged by others in the forum to still go to Jim's even if "just for the food." The "buddy system" was men tioned as a means of helping solve the security problem. The "buddy system" is two suites, one male and one female, paired off for extra security. The Senate will be posting specific guidelines and details concerning this system this week. A major complaint issued by several students was the crowding of the PE facilities by "townies." Students said that since they pay more money, they should have priority. People from the area pay for a membership in the S.A.F.E. club which allows them to use facilities such as the weightroom, racquet- ball courts and the bowling alleys. "It all boils down to money," said Louie Wemett of the PE Center. Funds were needed to remodel the facility, he said. He also recognized the problem of non-students and other un authorized persons using the Center. The doors can't be chained for fire laws but students were told that they have the right to ask non-students for S.A.F.E. Club identification cards. If the person does not have a card, then the student can ask them to leave or get a PE worker to it for them. Also the influx of non- students has disturbed residents of High land as these persons use the doors to get to the gym. Other topics discussed were the 14-meal a week plan, funding of athletic scholarships, animal lab conditions and the combination locks in the women's residence halls. At the end of the foaim, one student went as far as to ask if the student body could bring Dean Greer to court for supposed violations of the student rights. According to the student forum minutes, "The Student Life Com- Cheryl Sparks, former SA student and staff member was one of many to sign petition against chaplain Interns. mittee has jurisdiction over the Dean, so complaints and such need to go through them. The Judicial Committee will be acting on this." President Hall commented on this statement,"Actually, the Student Life Committee does not have that authority over her (the Dean). President Reuschling is basically her tx)ss." Hall also commented that students wanting to take the Dean to court was a "sad thing." "It is unfortunate that students are not for reconciliation, but would rather take advantage of things in the past," he said. Hall noted that the students do have the opportunity "i do things themselves instead of complain ing." "We can make appointments with President Reuschling. That was not possible with the former president." CRUISE SHIP JOBS! *12,000 to *50.000 ) Call now! / V206-736-7000 ext. 120C (Call refundable)
