Sports Onyenyeonwu Qualifies for Nationals Eric Eubank Associate Editor George Onyenyeonwu has become the first person from St. Andrews to qualify for a track & field National Championship Meet since Jackie Amos qualified in the long jump in 1982. Last weekend at the University of Georgia, Onyeyeonwu ran a 10.58 100 meters, which qualified him to go to the NAIA National Cham pionships at Southern Azuza College in Azuza, California. The qualifying time for the 100 meters is 10.7 seconds. Onyenyeonwu won his heat of the 100m, and finished 5th overall at the meet. "He ran the race extremely well.", said SA Track & Field Coach Gordy Scoles. "His start was so good, it was like some body just picked him up and threw him out of the blocks for 20 meters.", said Scoles. He also just missed qualifying for the 200 me ters. George ran a 21.65 for the 200m. The qualifying mark for the 200m is 21.64 seconds. "George really ran the 200m too fast. He was going so fast, that it caused him to break his stride for just a split second. It was just enough to prevent him from qualifying for the 200m.",said Coach Scoles. Both marks are new St. Andrews records. Earlier this year it seemed unlikely that he would be able to run this fast. Last spring Onyenyeonwu hurt a groin muscle. It was still bother ing him in March. A re-ex- amination of the injury showed it to be a slightly different injury than previ ously thought. A change in treatments healed the leg. "I would like to thank all the members of the training staff, especially Dawn (Langley) for taking care of me and my leg.", said George. The NAIA National Championships will be held from May 17-May 20. Riders 2nd In Nation Debbie Harding Staff Writer After a long and compieti- tive year, the St. Andrews Equestrian Team has achieved results of which we can all he proud. This year was the first year in a new division for the team, and despite the tougher competition our team did well sending three riders to the regionals: Karen Faunt, Mindy Denny , and Kat Caridakis. Karen Leabo, Kat Caridakis, and Susan Yeaman were the team rid ers, and Becky Loffert com- p>eted as an individual. The competiton consisted of four different sections: Dressage Spiortif, Stadium jumping. Cross- Country jumping and a written phase. St. Andrews' top rider, Karen Leabo, placed first in every section, some thing which has never been done in the history of this show! Susan Yeaman placed third overall in the Dressage Sportif section, and the team finished Re serve - Champions, only 2 points behind Sweet Briar College who emerged as champions of the show. Becky Loffert and Kat Cari dakis also placed well in the overall standings. For the written phase of the competition, which is a vol untary sections and does not count in determining the final score, the St. An drews team placed 1 st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. Coaches Shelby French and Jon Conyers and all of the rid ers should be congratu lated for their hard work and dedication which they have put forth all year.
