Approxima-tely 1800 Scot land County youths under the age of 18 are not receiv ing immunizations or other medical treatment. The families of these chil dren live below the poverty I level. They earn too much money for government as sistance or Medicaid, but not enough to afford private insurance. Money is necessarily spent on immediate needs such as food, not immunizations or treatments for ear infec tions. The lack of medical care usually results in child- hooddeafness or the con traction of preventable ill nesses, such as measles or mumps. Help is available to these families through a state wide organization called the Caring Program. The caring Program offers free medical insurance to cover children's immunizations and doctor visits. The insurance is made available through contribu tions. The honors SAGE class is trying to raise schol arships for the Caring Pro gram. A scholarship is $204 -the cost of insuring one child for one year. A mere $17 covers a child for one month. If interested in donating, _ foX'information, please con tact Krys Wood at ext. 253 482.
