News From China
The St. Andrews Delegation
mr^'
Lisa Gaw and Marina Lail on the Great Wall
Greetings from China!
Just a short note to let you all
know how things are pro
gressing in Beijing. This
year's group has been very
active, both in classes and
the community. Much to
our disbelief, we are all fi
nally learning Chinese. It is
an incredible feeling to
travel ciround the city and be
able to converse to a small
degree with native speak
ers.
There are ten students in
this year's group. Our fac
ulty advisor is Dr. Tom Wil
liams of the History Depart
ment. We are divided be
tween two 100 level Chinese
classes, except for Todd
Jones, who is at the 150 level.
Classes are divided into
three sections-written, oral,
and grammar. Everyone is
doing well thus far in
classes. We are also enrolled
in a Culture class which
meets one a week. Topics
covered in this class include
geography, education, po
litical structures, and his
tory? Our speakers are Chi
nese professors from vari
ous universities and re
search institutes. It is a great
way to Icani about the soci
ety in which we have be
come immensed.
The group has done a
good deal of traveling, both
within Beijing and outside
the city. We have had op-
portunitiesto visit Tian
anmen Square, the Forbid-

den City, Mao's Mauso
leum, the Great Hall of the
People, and various temples
and parks. We traveled to
Mutianyu recently and
climbed the Great Wall
(Many of us now sporting t-
shirts and sweatshirts pro
claiming our accomplish
ment). Some St. Andrews
people have traveled indi
vidually to such places as
Chenge and Shanghaiguan.
Our Spring Break trip was to
Luoyang and Xian, both an
cient Capitols of China. We
viewed such sights as the
Buddhist Grottoes, the
White Horse Temple, and
the Terracotta Soldiers.
This semester, St. An
drews has the largest repre
sentation of any college/
university in the CET pro
gram. Our group has be
come very close knit, yet we
have made many friends
with students from colleges
and universities from all
over the world: Yale, Har
vard, Cambridge, Bowdoin,
and Swarthmore, to name a
few. One imp>ortant St. An
drews group endeavor is
hosting the first annual
"Ganza Abroad." This will
be held the first weekend in
May and will feature a live
band, bike races, ultimate
frisboe, and other events.
As you can see, we are all
happy, healthy, and living
the St. Andrews tradition in
Beijing!

International Week a Success

Contributing
International week began
on the 9th of April and con
tinued until the 16th. Dur
ing the week, many interna
tional activities were held
which were sponsored and
arranged by the World Cul
ture Club, a club for interna
tional and national stu
dents.
The first event was the
Vespers on Sunday. This
event was sponsored by the
club cind by speaker Gail
Porter. The main theme was
to celebrate "diversity."
Many spoke about how the
people of the world should
try to love each other. Bobby
Musengwa commented,
"We're all born equal, and
we must try to like and re
spect each other."
Preceding the interna
tional events was Transla
tion Night , during which
many p>oems were trans
lated from various native
languages to English. Sev
eral skits were performed,
and songs were sung as
well. Dr. Lee Dubs spon
sored the event.
The next activity for the
week was Ping-Pong and
Badmitton Night on Mon
day. Many students
showed for both the ping-
pong tournament, spon
sored by Sean Hayes, and
badmitton, sponsored by
Saikat Chatterjee and Ash-
wani Nagpal.
The following day was
World Culture Day. Nine-
hundred students came
from nearby high schools to
attend the event. This day
included competitions in
skits and poems in different
languages. This day repre
sented how different cul
tures blend together to give
a representation of the dif
ferent countries.
The movie "A Passage to
India" was shown on Wed
nesday. The movie depicts
how Indians lived during
the earlier periods of civili
zation. Much of the movie
