llie Fall season of men's
tennis began last weekend
with the inaugural bt.
Andrews Invitational. The
tournament consisted of
other college competitors as
,vell as local talent. Bob
Bierbaum, St. Andrews
coach and tournament
director, stated that he was
pleased with the level of
competition as well as
performance of the St.
Andrews team.
Todd Sumner, of East
Carolina University, was the
singles champion, defeating
St. Andrews freshman
Charles Davis 6-1, 6-2.
Sumner, seeded first in the
tournament, defeated
Michael Roberts of St.
Andrews 6-1, 6-0, in the
semi-finals to advance to the
final round. Davis, the
second seed in the
tournament, defeated St.
Andrews teammate Eric
Digons 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to
advance to the finals.
In doubles, the first seeded
team of Ken West and
Michael Roberts fell to the
second seeded team of Davis
and Sumner 6-3, 6-1. West
and Roberts defeated the
team of Bob Bierbaum andl
Jim Elliot 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the
semi-finals, while Sumner
and Davis reached the finals
by a semi-final default.
Bierbaum stated that he felt
positive about the upcoming
JFall season for the Knights,
and was optimistic about the
future of St. Andrews tennis.
He added that he was
pleased that most of his
players played up to their
potential and expectations,
and was most particularly
pleased with the progress of
David Ham and Ken West.
The next match for the
Knights will be the
Methodist College
Invitational on Sept. 22.

Volleyball Starts Slow

The St. Andrews volley-
M team has gotten off to a
slow start this season, vwth
three early season losses.
The Coots fell to Pembroke
® Sep. 6 3-0. The team,
under first-year coach Lau-
■■sl Snuth, is struggling wdth
3 rebuilding year. Only
three players returned from
2st year's team, which also
experienced the loss of All-
American Kristi Klugel.
Captain Kristin Mosher is
expected to provide the
much needed leadership, as
one returning player.
Mosher is a senior from
Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Also returning for the team
are Megan Kleinbauer, a
junior from Baltimore, and
Rinni Dumire, a junior4rom
Portsmouth, Virginia.
St. Andrews also suffered
losses to Lenoir-Rhyne 10-
15, 15-9, 6-15, 12-15. The
third loss for the Lady
Knights was to Francis Mar
ion, 7-15, 7-15,10-15.
The next match for St.
Andrews is scheluled for
September 19.

The SA Women’s Tennis Team
will play five matches during
Che Fall. Experienced players
are invited to join.
