January 26, 1990 The Lance On Campus Hosstyle Pat Hoss Late at night, after I had been studying for hours, I felt a craving for something to eat. SAGA being dosed, I resigned myself to going to the Gathering Place. This name is appropriate, as I found at least two people, besides the workers, are there every night. This is considered a large gather ing for any school, but espe cially St. Andrews. As I entered this domain, I was immediately struck by the decor. Probably not one student who may have had an opinion on the pattern was consulted. No frills. No extras, generic-that's the way to describe the hospital cafeteria decorum in the Gathering Place. My ears were gently'as saulted by the softly blaring noises coming from two televisions tuned to differ ent channels. It is ingenious, stupendous. Only here could you find the best way to get absolutely nothing from double the informa tion source. It made me smile as I walked up to the counter. "Praise this school," issued from my lips. Once at the counter, I looked at the carefully hung crane your neck this far if you can" menu board, "i think I'll have a nice juicyhot burger, some hot curly fries, and a cold drink-just like those fast food places, only cheaper. Well, one out of two isn't too bad. While waiting the arrival of my hot delicious food , I looked around. Again, the well-placed lighting scheme , as in the library, hit me here again." Those flourescent lights are just so nice that this school has put them everywhere. (I think I'll mention this decorating idtato Pop.) In this room though, the main features seem to be the huge pictur esque windows that look out on two wonderful views. One looks over the lovely patio outside the cafeteria, towards the "trash-free, no fishing, but what-the-hay- ril-do-it-anyway lake. From these windows, you can see the never-heard-it- ring bell tower, and the let’s- repave-it-so-Ron-can-run- people-faster causewalk. By the way, that causewalk was designed to flood dur ing rainstorms because it is how they irriagate the grass growing through the cracks, and not because they forgot to put in drainage. This view continues over to the other side of the lake, the educational side, but that is a different column. The other view takes you into the panoramic borders of the parking lot for the SAGA workers, and to the grounds and building we call Meek. Discluding the other seven, this is the clean est and best kept of all the residence halls. What can be said of the fine, upstanding, slightly intoxicated stu dents who live there? All of them have a GPA, be it ever so humble, and study a sub ject. My thoughts were inter rupted by the arrival of my food, with the usual promptness of a slow fast- food place. It was quite ed ible, but the crispy curls were hard, and the burger was not exactly what Wendy's had in mind when it promised a thicker, jucier burger. The soda was excel lent, which is the important thing. Sometimes a fast- food place doesn't get the drink right, and then you are forced to throw it all away. What is a meal with out the drink? The Gather ing Place understands this, and exemplifies it in their drinks, for they know wi th a good drink, you can wash down anything. The evening ended with a walk outside on the lovely vernandah that encircles the Belk Center. This allows you to breathe some fresh air, mixed with swamp gas and gasoline fumes. This allows you to cough, hack, and wheeze yourself to a better respiratory system. 1 returned to my room satis fies that 1 had spent money tonight. □ ca PG] □03 a oaura aiaGia. SIHK]IIQi7 Come Join the /aughter ! Monday, Jan.29 8:00pm Meek Main Lounge Update Susie Bennett Welcome back! I hope everyone had a Merry Christ mas. Are you all ready for the New Year? I hope so, because there are a lot of things going on campus, as usual. The Student LifeCommittee has been really busy. At the end of Fall Term, we appointed an Aids task force. Thea Engleson is the chair of the committee. Rodger Decker, Karen Tyndall, Chad Haddix, and Shirley Arnold comprise the rest of the committee. The com mittee was formed to help the campus community stay aware of the impact of Aids in the world, and at St. Andrews. Their job is to educate us and to keep us informed. Another topic that the Student Life committee has and is discussing is the Honor Code. Specifically, we're looking at how the Honor Code and our Judicial System work together. What we're trying to do is find any problems in our Judicial System and make recom mendations to correct them. This is a long process and it will take a lot of time and a lot of input. We would really like to hear from the students. T^e Student Life Committee meets on Tuesdays at 12:00 in the Senate Meeting Room and on Fridays in LA 152. Please come by and share thoughts with us. Seniors will be receiving a letter from me explaining a party that the Office of Alumni Affairs is throwing for us. Feel free to drop by the office (in the LA build ing next to the Commuter Student Lounge) and talk to Summer Brock about it. Take my word for it, when you hear about, you'll like it! Just another reminder. Please put your aluminum cans in the blue garbage cans that are marked for the Humane Society. In the high rise halls, the blue cans are in the Main Lounge. In the low-rise halls they can be found in the courtyard. Thanks for helping out! Greer Continued from pg.l writers, it is possible to see their evolution in a histori cal, sociological, and psy chological way." Most people think that Black women did not start writing until the 1960's. The truth is that Black women were writing in America as early as the 1700's. In was not until the 1960's however that the genre gained acceptance with the general public. Some writers, like Alice Walker {The Color Purple ) are now considered as popu lar. Common themes in the genre include the problem of identifying with a society that is both racist and sexist. Dr. Greer added that she decided to teach the course because she enjoys teach ing. In the future she hof>es to teach at least one course a year, as long as it does not interfere with her duties as Dean of Students.
