George Onyenyeonwu fin
ished first for the third time in
as many races Saturday at
Francis Marion College.
George won easily in both
the 100m and the 200m.
Although he admits the
100m is his favorite race,
George has won convinc
ingly in the 200m in each
race. He also placed first a a
UNCW meet in his first race
of the season, and then re
peated the feat the next
week at the Seahawk Invita
tional.
George gives credit for his
success thus far to his off
season workouts, his strong
work ethic, and the ex
perience of running in the
nationals last year. George
missed All-American by one
place last year, and re
marked that that experience
has been a motivating factor
this year.
George also added that
another reason he com
petes well is that his team
expects him to win, and has
faith in him. "They treat like
I am a champion, "he said.
George said his goal for
this season is to go unde
feated. He long-range goal
is to run in the Goodwill
Games and the Olympics.
George says that he is of
ten asked why he decided to
come to St. Andrews, a
school that is small and can
doveryiittle for him in way of
sponsorships, even though
he is one of the fastest run
ners inthe nation. "Itellthein
that I came here for the envi
ronment and the commy-
nity, and not for the sakeol
track. "The nicest people I
have ever met are here at St.
Andrews. The faculty is
great, and I just lile the
community as a whole,
Track will take care ot itself,
" he said.
Onyenyeonwu said that
he feels his goals are well
within reach thsi season. He
says that as a senior he is
more determined that evei
to make the most of this
season, and prepare lor big
ger and better things attef
graduation.
