Because of late season injuries and inner-team conflict, the Knights took only three players to the conference tournament, and therefore were never in contention for the team title. William Carter finished with a record of 9-7 to lead the team in singles, and the second year doubles team of Michael Roberts and Ken West finished with a record of 10-4. Women's Tennis Finished Strong Rhinos Defeat Duke By Michael Roberts Editor-in-Chief Although the St. Andrews Women's tennis team got off to a very disappointing start, they managed to gather themselves as a whole and fared very well in the confer ence tournament. Going into the Conference tournament, the Lady Knights had only won one match-a 5-4 victory over Belmont Abbey. All singles and doubles members made the consolation finals during the tournament. Winners of the consolation brackets were Robyn Went, at number two singles, Makiko Tomizawa at number five singles, and Denise Wertz at number six singles. The teams of Kathy Feely and Robyn Went, and Dawn Guthrie and Kim Hallin also played in the consolation final match. First year coach Joanne Messick admitted that playing in a tough conference along with tough outside competition made the earty part of the season a struggle. "It's tough to see improvement when you're playing powerhouses such as Guilford, l^ethodist, and High Point," said tvlessick. Messick stated that although the season was frustrating, the team entered the tournament with much excitement and enthusiasm. This excitement carried over after the toumament, as the team defeated Greensboro College9-0, "Ithinktheteam could finally see how much they improved once they i started playing teams at their | own level," said Messick "They were able to put it all together." Messick hopes that with a positive experience in the conference tournament and a solid recruiting year, the team will be more competitive next year. The team will lose Dawn Guthrie, Nancy Often and Denise Wertz to graduation, and the services of Makiko Tomizawa, who is a one-year exchange student. "You can't measure success by scores," stated Messick, "I'm proud of what the team was able to accom plish." The St.Andrews Rugby earned its first victory in its short history, with a win over Duie 12-7 on April 21.
