OPINION Pipe Dreams Chad Esposito What's In a Name Saint Andrews Presbyterian College- this is tiie name of the school that I attend. Wtiat about you? So nnuch emphasis has been placed in ojr society on names and what we name things. Since receiving material on this sctiool as a prospective, I have realized that there is a "Pres byterian" in our school's name. Being an active member on campus, I have witnessed several ways that some students and administrators have tried to reword our school's name. On tests and syllabi, certain professors write at the top "St. Andrews College." The Business Club chose not to include "Presbyterian" in our school name on their T-shirts. Students, much of the time, whentalking about where they attend school or have gradu ated from leave the "Presby- lerian" out. Is it that embarrassing to be labeled a "Presbyterian" school? I can understand using only St. Andrews as an abbreviation when discussing something about the college, or for even that matter on T- shirts. But when using an official title, "Presbyterian" should be included, and said/ written with dignity. When you sign your name to a document, you don't only sign a portion of your name, you sign your whole name. I had known before coming to this school that the name of this institution is Saint Andrews Presbyterian College. Either the official name of the school should be changed, or people should take the time to respect its name. Leaving out the "Presbyterian" in our school's title tells me one of two things: either people are too lazy to write out the full name of our institution, or they would re ally rather not be represented by that name. Our school's name has been established for almost thirty years, let's keep it the same. Support for Pond Scum We find it incumbent upon ourselves to correct a certain >iiisrepresentation that appeared on the front page of the April issue of your publication. we were reported to have debted at Sreat length the question: What makes men basically pond scum?" Griggs Resigns Position With this notice, 1 hereby resign my position as Assistant Attorney General. 1 feel that I am unable to continue in this role for a variety of reasons, most of which concern the unwarranted interference of the Student Life Office into the student judicial system. The Dean of Students has been particularly unaccountable to the students and to justice. I feel that I can make this accusation based on facts. In the first place, since she has arrived she has not kept a case book of all of the judgements handed down by the court. This makes it extremely difficult to assess precedence when determining recommendations for sentencing. In the second place, she has charqed students with violations before Judicial Committee can conduct an investigation. The Saltire states that it is the responsibility of the judicial Committee to charge students based on information gathered-not just by using the security report. The Dean also conducts her own investigations into allegations concerning students which culminate in the bypassing of the entire judicial system. She has met with students and questioned them without sufficiently informingthemoftheirrighfs, including the right to have a hearing. I am making this resignation public because I feel compelled to let the student body know what a travesty their judicial system is becoming. The presumption of innocence is the basis for any fair legal system. Without it, there might as well be no student defense council, student / faculty hearing court, or attorney general. I sincerely hope that the St. Andrews community does not let the Dean of Students have her way , and sit idle while she disbands the student judicial system. There are things that students can do-when public hearings are announced, please attend. When com mittees to address the judicial system are formed, join them. Insure that student input continues. A student judicial system without students is no laughing matter; it is dangerous to student rights. Mary Griggs More on Hosstyle well The sexist ones, however, (and we will leave readers to decide in which categorythe Editorbelongs), would do well to study a bit of church history. They might learn something from the common feature (or lack thereof) that unites the fate of the third centurytheotogian Origen with that of the twelfth century sholastic Abelard. Incisevely yours, Leigh Sparacino Mel Bringle Laura Rose Mary Griggs Being a member of St. Andrews delegation in Beijing, I have only just learned of the furor regarding Pat Hoss' column "Hosstyle" that has arisen since the column concerning Mecklenburg Dorm appeared. I am disturbed by the calls of removalof the column from the Lance, and would like to make a few points. Are we to punish Mr. Hoss because he has offended someone?(l had no idea the people in Meek were so sensitive.) It would appear that the national trend to censor "bad speech" (originating from campuses at Emory University, University of Wisconsin, University of California, University of Buffalo Law School, and several others) has finally reared its ugly head at St. Andrews. These mentioned campuses have placed restrictions in their school codes(our Saltire) forbidding various types of "bad speech." It is now unlawful to speak out against feminism, racial equality, or a religion. Th6 fsct rGmsins that there are many people still in this far-from perfect world who hold opinions that are not currently considered "fashionable." These people, whether you like it or not, have the undeniable right to express their opinions Mr Hoss also has the riaht to express his opinions through the Lance(which is the major channel for expression at S.A.). If I may make a suggestion, why don't those few put-upon individuals who so vehemently disliked Mr. Hoss'sopinion, write a column that expresses views thatthey like. My guess is that Pat Hoss would not be yelling for the column's removal if he didn't like its contents. One final note: I enjoy Pat s column immensly. He is one of the few students at St. Andrews who backs the prevalent apathy on the campus. Anyone who can cause typically brain-dead St. Andrewsstudents to raise such a fuss is alright by me.
