ON CAMPUS Rugby Opens Fall Seaso By Sharon Frain The Rugby Club opened its 1990 fall sea son last Saturday with two scrimmages against UNCr Chapel Hill. The St. An drews' Rhinos split the two games, losing the first one 20-7, but bouncing back to win the second game 10-9 against the B-team. This year will be the first full season of games for the newly established club. Though this sport may be new to most of the players - and spectators - several Rhinos have par ticipated in the sport since they were in elementary school. The president of the Rugby Club, Kevin Finch and Garreth Grif fith have been playing rugby together for more than ten years. Anton Whiley and Adam Whitehead have also played the sport for well over ten years. In Zim babwe, rugby is an estab lished sport which draws as much attention and rouses as much spirit as football does in America. Though the Rhinos have some experienced players, the closest most team members have come to playing rugby is on his igh school football team. Football players really make the difference. Even though rugby is almost the total opposite of football, their strength is really needed in this sport," stated Kevin. Kevin praised his teammates, saying, "it is amazing how quickly everyone has caught on. The team's determination is wonderful. Everybody shows a lot of com mittment to this game, and most of them are still learn ing to play. "The Rhinos have great potential with the line putting on a good show last Saturday. However, we still need to get into shape." Kevin is very hopeful for what the season will en tail. Kevin optimistically stated, "a few more prac tices and everything will be fine. We mainly need to work on our speed and our scrums." The Rhinos will be looking at doing fund-raisers in order to get some badly needed jerseys and to aquire a scrum machine. The brutality of the game is lessened by the comradity of the olavers. Rugby is the only game where you can batter and bruise the opponent throughout a game and then at the after-game party become best of bud dies. "Rugby is more of a social event among the players than a competi tion." Finch said. "I'm not saying that we don't take it seriously, just that it isn't as competitive as other brutal sports." Next Saturday, Sept. 22, the Rhinos will host one of the top teams in the league, Guilford. Saturday night the Rugby Club will sponsor the traditional party after the game with the Alligator Cowboys, a country-rock band, play ing in Farrago. The Rugby Team has a six game fall season and also will be playing a spring season. Spring sea son will once again be highlighted by the Rhinos playing Duke during Ex travaganza.
