Morgan Receives
Honorary Doctorate

Praised as a “model for a trustee”
and a father who “never stopped leam-
ing,” James Lauder Morgan, Sr. of
Laurel Hill was awarded a honorary
Doctor of Humane Letters from St.
Andrews Presbyterian College Thurs
day night.
Morgan received the honorary
degree in a special ceremony held in
the main lounge of St. Andrews’
William Henry Belk Center.
Approximately 75 people, includ
ing members of the Morgan family as
well as members of the St. Andrews
Board of Trustees, were on hand to
honor Morgan who rotated off the
board this month. He was replaced as
board chairman by James E. Hol
shouser, Jr., former governor of North
Carolina, with whom he serves as
national co-chair for the Campaign
for St. Andrews.
Holshouser, St. Andrews Presi
dent Thomas L. Reuschling and Dean
of College Thomas L. Benson made
the formal presentation of the degree.
The conferring of the degree was
done to recognize Morgan’s many
contributions and years of service to
St. Andrews. Morgan was a member
of the school’s Board of Trustees
from 1968-81 and then from 1982-
90, serving as board chairman for the
last three years.
Morgan’s community contribu
tions are not limited to his work with
St. Andrews. He is chairman of The
Morgan Foundation of Laurel Hill.
From 1953-68 Morgan served on the
Scotland County Board of Education
and from 1970-72 he was a member
of the Scotland County Board of
Commissioners. In 1974 Morgan was
chosen as chairman of the Board of
Trustees at Scotland Memorial Hos
pital. Currently a member of the Lau-
rinburg Rotary Club, Morgan is Past
President of the Community Concert
Association (North Carolina Sym
phony local chapter), the Scotland
County Arts Council, the Laurel Hill
Lions Club and the Scotland County
United Way.
Bom to the late Edwin Morgan
and Elise McKinnon Morgan on Dec.
31, 1924 in Charlotte, Morgan is
married to the former Elizabeth Evans
and has four children - Dr. James L.
Morgan, Jr. of Conyers, Ga., Dr.
Patricia Morgan Bullard of Albany,
Calif., and Katherine Morgan Ander
son and Susan Morgan Ferrell, both
of Laurel Hill.
After attending Davidson College
from 1941-43, Morgan served as a
U.S. Air Force navigator, eventually
reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
He resumed his college education at
the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill and graduated from there
in 1949 with a degree in commerce.
Morgan returned home that same year
to become secretary and vice presi
dent of Morgan Mills, which was re
named The Morgan Company in 1981.
Since 1961 Morgan has served as
company president.
St. Andrews Press
Moves to Sandhills
St. Andrews Review will move its
base of operations to Sandhillls
Community College in Pinehurst
following the publication of its 40th
issue this Spring. The magazine was
founded in 1969 and the first issue
came out in 1970.
Founding editor Ron Bayes, who
is also Director of St. Andrews Press,
emphasized that the Press will con
tinue producing from the campus of
St. Andrews in Laurinburg.
“Both the Press and The Review
are thriving,” Bayes said. “Both are
growing, too,” he added, “and to keep
up with the growth this rather dra
matic thrust was called for.”
Stephen E. Smith, Professor of
Communications and a fiction writer
and poet of note, will become the
editor of the magazine - to be called
ST. ANDREWS/SANDHILLS RE
VIEW and will see his first issue, the
magazine’s 41st off the press in au
tumn.
Bayes will continue as Director of
St. Andrews Press, assisted by Wil
liam Prosser, Business Manager, and
associate editors Grace Gibson and
William Morris, office manager, at
the Laurinburg campus. Smith’s edi
torial staff will include, as associate
editors, Richard Lewis, Chair of the
English Department at Sandhills and
Jim Halstead, Sandhills VP for Aca
demic Affairs, with consulting edi
tors to be named later.

Canalis Named
Teacher of the Year

Teacher of the Year

Janda Canalis, a graduate of St.
Andrews, a former residential direc
tor of Wilmington Hall, and wife of
Soccer Coach Lorenzo, was recently
honored with Scotland County's
Teacher of the Year.
A fourth grade teacher at North
Laurinburg School, Canalis is only in
her second year of teaching lanugage
arts and science. She worked eight
years previously as a nurse.
Canalis has been described as truly
understanding children and teaching.
"I want to know my students as
people." Her ability to speak at the
level of students has greatly improved
the performance of each of the stu
dents. "We work together more as a

family, not as a student/teacher."
"I want to get the kids excited
about learning. I love to learn and I
work real hard to make it exciting for
them, to make it come alive. I enjoy
that challenge."
Her greatest success is making the
learning come alive for each of her
students.
For instance, the day she was being
observed by the selection committee,
she was teaching what life would be
like if one was elderly. Each of the
children had to wear a wax paper
blindfold to simulate cataracts, place
a drying agent on the skin of their
