What’s going on St. Andrews? The weekend of the second to the fourth was fairly uneventful. Friday night was Dobie Strickland’s birth day, and Monday night cheerleader Mary Hunt celebrated her birthday in grand style. A small party was held in Granville in Dobie’s honor Friday. Everyone will be happy to know that the binhday boy remembers fairly little of the festivities. Friday at midnight, the Rugby Club built a bonfire out on Granville Beach. The bonfire included a loft, several crates, and leftovers from Farrago remodeling. Chris Edwards was in charge of the chainsaw, pretty scary!!! (The initiatorof the Connecticut Chaiasaw Massacre moved to St. Andrews) Scott Clark was in charge of marshmallows and he horded every last one. Pretty snobby Scooter! Many other small parties were held all over campus since there was no organized campus wide event. The last home rugby game was Saturday afternoon. As usual, there was a big turnout which may have contributed to the crushing of Davidson. The guys won 41-0. Get off!!! They 1 ater celebrated with a small gatherin g of players and loyal fans. Our team disptiyedlhartypicalexoellentspcrBniinship and general gentlemanly manner by hosting the opposing team and the whistle-happy referee. Everyone had a smashingly wholesome good time. Abe was somewhat chilly and Scooter showed what a thoughtful and generous friend he can be, by offering the shirt off of his back to his fellow team mate. The campus was pretty dead Sat urday night exceptforaparty in Winston- Salem hosted by the baseball team. Most of the partying took place in suites one and two. Thanks for keeping the night from being a complete loss. Wednesday night John Church sat in awe as his tarot cards were read. Perhaps this contributed to the ex tremely largeamountof foodheconsumed later that evening. You can really pack it in, John! This past weekend was more event ful. The baseball team sponsored their annual Air Band Contest Friday night. S wanee, Louie, Cayce, Colin, and Stu encouraged great audience participation when they sang Don McLean's“Ameri can Pie.” The big winners of the night, however, were “Cheech and the Greasers.” The band consisted of Jason “The Evil One” King, Todd “Val Kilmer” Rodriguez, Brett Katz. Desi Williams, Paul Frank, and Gary Wood. The group did a chilling rendi tion of "Grease Lightning." “Chico and the Women,” Amy Pittard, Tiffani Orange, Lori Burney and Juan Ortega, took second place. The group sang “Vanilla Ice.” Last but not least, the third place winners were the “Hair Lords,” their attire was a bit frightening. They wore polyester Western clothing and long wigs. It’s the first time we’ve seen any of them with any hair at all. It was quite a shock. You should try it some time for real, guys! The group included Mike Poole, Mike Bell, Tim Whitson, Todd Reische, Lee Gogol, Jeff DeRosa, and Brad Pederson. All the women present could only dream that they had Mike B. and Jeff’s legs. Interesting outfits! Congratulations ev eryone! You all did a great job! Dress to Impress, held last Saturday, was covered in tinsel. The VJ had his good and bad moments but the food was consistently tasty. Everyone donned their finest clothes to attempt to impress some special someone. It didn’t look like anyone had much success. The dancing was held to a minimum. Whether it was the music or the crowd we’re not quite sure. Good friends, good food, good times! Now we’re going to ask,for your help. If you know of anything exciting going on around campus that you want everyone to know, drop us a note: Jane Karpenske, Box 650. We will verify anything given to us. Thanks for your help. Remember, we saw what you did and we know who you are. Subs-n-Cream Join us for Monday night Football in the Gathering Place 8.30-12.30 Good food + Good friends = A Great Night Air Band Contest - Even the "Village People" made a guest appearance at the annual Air Band Contest" held last Saturday night. The group thrilled the captive audience with some of their all time greatest hits, including "YMCA" and "In the Navy." (Photo by Raylene Kaufman) SGA Report By Abraham VanWingerden Senate President For those who regularly satisfy their hunger in SAGA, you have probably noticed that a referendum vote was conducted last week to assess the feel ings of students on the issue of smoking in SAGA. We had a great response to the election with 407 votes cast. On a regular night at SAGA, about four hundred people dine at this location, so we felt that the number of ballots was sufficient to obtain the views of the students. After countin g the votes twice to ensure validity,’tKe final results were: Smoking not allowed in SAGA - 47% Smoking only allowed in certain areas - 32% Smoking allowed in all areas - 21% These totals can be deciphered in a variety of ways. It could be said that by adding the first two totals, nearly eighty percent of the students wish to have some type of restrictions on smoking while they dine. On the other hand, it could be argued that fifty-three percent of the students wish that some form of smoking be allowed in SAGA. There fore, the Student Senate will discuss this issue at length before deciding what action should be taken. Options that are being discussed include opening the Gathering Place from 6:00 to 7:00 and having coffee and desserts available for smokers and non-smokers alike. If you have a creative and feasible option, please relay those thoughts to your student senators or myself In other issues, we have been dis cussing conservation issues especially concerning electricity use on campus. In my last article, I said that the dollar figures would be available on our elec tric bill. Althoughlwas under theimpression that we spend nearly $200,000 a year on electricity alone, I was wrong. At St. Andrews College, wespendnearly$44,000 a MONTH on electricity which adds to a total of over $527,000 a YEAR. This figure could be effectively reduced if we all remember to shut off our stereos when we go to bed and turn off the lights when we leave the room. The aluminum can recycling is going well, and let’s start conserving some energy also. If you have any conserva tion ideas, please talk to Diane Reid, who is the Environmental spokesper son for the Senate^* For those of you wfedering about our student directories, they should be out sometime after Thanksgiving and they will include home addresses and phone numbers. Finally, for those who lobbied your professors concerning the graduation issue, thank you for your help and remember that student con cerns will be addressed and alleviated if we all work together. Rhinos Split Two With High Point .If L- Buy one sub or sandwich and get 50% off on a second one! with this coupon. ^ By Abraham VanWingerden Contributing Braving thedamp and brisky weather, the St. Andrews Rhinos travelled to High Point College this past weekend for a pair of games with the High Point Rugby Club. Riding a four game winning streak, the Rhinos were unable to get their offense on track and they proceeded to fall to High Point by a score of 10-4. Lane Moore scored the lone try for the Rhinos during the first game. But in the second game, the Rhinos retumed to their winning ways as the offense warmed up for a 20-4 victory which raises the Rhinos record to 6-4- 1. Jon Holloway, Kevin Finch, Chris Edwards, and Lane Moore all scored tries for the Rhino’s balanced offensive attack. Abe Walston and Jon Holloway added conversion kicks to complete the Rhinos scoring. The Rhinos return to action for their final games of the season this Saturday whentheyvisitUNC-Wilmington for a pair of games. A victory would give the Rhinos a winning record for the season and would also improve their ranking which is important in determiningseedingsinthestate tournament in the Spring. Not bad for a team that finished with a record of 1-7 in their first semester of play last Spring. n Highland/Hall / presents I / Mind over Matter with opening act (T.B.A.) Friday Nov, 16th 9.00pm-1.0 'Albemarle Main Lounqe $3.00 Admission ^'Refreshments and Food Provided ♦
