Indeed, [the statistics are impressive for a team f that just barely broke even last year. , Four All-District performers, includ- ‘ ing Hayley Ladell, a freshman who led the District in scoring, led this year’s team to a 13-4-1 record and a second- ' place finish in the District. The Lady Knights started off this season with seven straight wins. They went into their eighth game of the sea son against Elon College, a nationally- rankedprogram, with high hopes. However, Elon beat the Lady Knights 5-2. Then came two games in a row against teams that were ranked number one in the nation in their divisions, Methodist College and UNC-Greensboro. The Lady Knights were handed losses in each of these games by scores of 5-0 and 6-0. 'r!-?'-" .‘o -i.io The Lady Knights were determined to have a good season, and proved it by winning their next three games. First was Maryville College, which gave the Lady Knights a good game, but lost 2-1. Then the offense let loose in a 7-0 win over Catawba College. The next game only increased their momentum as they destroyed Limestone College 10-0. The Lady Knights were up for their next game, which was against District oppo nent Presbyterian College. After a hard- fought game, as well as overtime play, the game ended in a bitter 4-4 tie. The last two regular season games were both won by the Lady Knights by the score of 3-0 over the University of the South, and by a forfeit against Ferrum College. It was now time for the District 26 playoffs, and the Lady Knights found themselves up againstPresbyterian College once again. This time, however, the game ended 2-1 in the Knight’s favor. This sent the Lady Knights on to th; Dis trict 26 final to be played against Elon College. After falling behind late in the first half, the Lady Knights contin ued to play hard, refusing to give up. However, Elon College ended up the victor by a score of 4-0, which sent them on to the NAIA Subnationals in Berry, Ga. After the game, four players from St. Andrews were recognized as mem bers of the All-District team. Ladell, sophomore halfback Joy Fein berg, junior forward Cathy Feeley, and junior sweeper Kati Vines were all honored. These players led a very balanced team that outshot their opponents this season 412-203, and outscored their oppo nents 61-31. Ladell, Feinberg, and Feeley accounted for 44 of these goals, with the rest spread out amon g eight members of the team. The defense, led by Vines, allowed less than two goals a game throughout the season and also had a total of eight shutouts. The team will be losing only two seniors this year, Susanne Lusk and Susan Yeaman. This looks hopeful in light of the youth and success of this year’s team. In addition to the many returning players, Canalis looks for ward to the return of Catherine Holsopple, a projected sophomore starter who did not play this season due to an ankle injury. Also unable to play this season was Joanne Rivera, another projected starter, who was declared ineligible in an academic mess-up by the NAIA. Tamara Jung, a junior stopper, ech oed the hopes of a good season next year when she said, “The only barrier we have as a team is psychological because we’re so young. I didn’t think we’d do as well as we did this year, and I’m hoping next year we’ll be able to beat the teams we should have beat this year.” . v !U> Woftien’s Basketball Rebuilding Successfully By Louie Wemett Staff Writer The 1990-91 St. Andrews Women’s Basketball team swings intoaction Saturday November 17 versus Methodist. One thing is certain; they will be improved from last year. Very improved. After a rebuilding season last yea, the Lady Knights appear to have a good shot at a winning season. Second year coach Nancy Swain has the team’s goal set at 500, but there are quite a few people who believe they will achieve even more. This year’s squad will be stronger and the Lady Knights will have more depth, something that last year’s team lacked immensely. Returning from last year’s squad are Debbie Jones, a sopho more guard from Jamestown, NC; Heidi Poole, a senior guard from Raleigh, NC; Amy Fortune, a sophomore guard from Lithonia, GA; Susanne Lusk, a senior guaidfromHelen,GA; andBarbaraStenger, a sophomore forward from Rockaway Beach,NY. Head Coach Mark Simons was pleased with the team’s perform ance, “We played very well offen- sivelyanddefen-sivelyagainsttheShawnee State team and I saw a lot of good things. Due to team injuries, I had ap proached the tournament as an event just to see where we were as a team and to see what adjustments we’d have to make. On Saturday night against the tournament host team, U V A-Clinch Valley, we struggled a bit offensively but did what we had to do to win. Overall, I was very pleased.” In Saturday night’s game against UVA-Clinch Valley the Knights won in overtime 83-75. The game was high lighted by senior John Davis who scored 28 points. Donald Galbreath scored 11, Mark English 15, and Shawn Colquiett dropped in 13 points and 11 rebounds, the overtime victory was a lift for the team.
