As April 24 approaches, the
members of this year’s ANRC Riding
Team are preparing their horses and
themselves, both physically and
^ mentally for the competition that they
have looked forward to all year. This
year’s competition will be held in
Richmond, Va. at Still Meadow Farm.
The team is leaving on April 24 and
will compete on April 27 and 28.
ANRC Nationals has become a
much anticipated tradition for the St.
Andrews team. With fall and spring
tryouts, the riders work all year to
gain a spot on the team. The school
J can field
a team of three riders with up to four
others competing as individuals. This
year St. Andrews has seven riders
who are working toward this goal.
These riders and their mounts are:
Susan Yeaman - Midnight Derby
Robin Williams - Cappy
J.R. McCaully - Hidalgo
Tracie Berard - Irish
Suzi Riecke - Senior Status
Malinda Grice - Annie Be Good
Tracey Kenworthy - Say When
Each and every one of these riders
wishes to represent their school,
whether as a team member or an indi
vidual. With less than a month to go
the squad is practicing and polishing
to present the best performance and
look possible.
For the past two years, St. An
drews has placed second in the com
petition, and both years they have
fielded the overall highpoint rider.
The outiook is good this year for
maintaining or besting that record.
With several new horses and some
new riders as well, St. Andrews has All Smiles - Malinda Grice with
much untested potential. Give these Motivation, is all set for the national

Spring Soccer Preparation for Fall Season
By Jennifer Woodward
Editor
The men’s and women’s soccer
teams have been staying in shape
during the spring season. The teams
have been practicing two times a
week and are competing, so that
they may be ready to play during the
fall season. Coach Lorenzo Canalis
feels that the spring season is very
important to his players, “We’re
using the spring to allow the fresh
men and those who didn ’ t play much
in the fall to accumulate actual match
experience.” The spring time also
gives the players a chance to prac
tice things that they don’t have time
for in the fall such as basic technique
drills and playing short-sided games.
The men’s team hosted an indoor
tournament on March 2. The St.
Andrews White team lost in one of
the two semi-final matches. The
game has gone into overtime and
the team lost 1-0 after a penalty
kick. Goalie Travis Loseke was
named to the all-tournament team.
Raleigh United Team won overall.
The team lost again 1-0 against
Francis Marion on March 10. How
ever, Coach Canalis was pleased
with the team’s efforts. “We only
had 13 players that were able to
play. Francis Marion is a quality
team. Their record last year was 16-
4.”
The men’s next match will be
next Sunday April 7 at Coastal
Carolina. Other matches include
Coker on April 12, and Pembroke
April 16. The women’s team will
see action on April 13 at Elon when
they will play against Elon and
UNC-Greensboro. Alumni Week
end is scheduled for April 27, the
teams will surely see action as the alumni
soccer match begins at 2:00 p.m.
Pre-season for the upcoming year
will begin on August 25. The regular fall
season will begin September 11 for the
men, and September 15 for the women.
Both teams have a 16 game schedule
plus the playoffs.
Canalis is looking forward to the
upcoming season stating that the com
petition is going to be much stronger,
“and I thought this year was tough
enough!” Berry College, the current
NAIA national champions, has been
added to the women’s schedule. Also,
Lees McRae, a former junior college
that has switched to a four-year school
and as Canalis describes “Very strong,
has been added to both the men’s and
women’s fall schedules.
Canalis has high hopes for both teams.
