Oct. 2. 1991 The Lance • St. Andrews Presbyterian College Sports Page 5 St. Andrews Athletic Department Undergoes Several Personnel Changes The St. Andrews athlctic department underwent several personnel changes during the summer, including the nam ing of a new athletic director. Lorenzo Canalis, who is entering his seventh season as men’s soccer coach and fourth season as women’s socccr coach, was selected to become the school’s new athletic direc tor after former AD and men’s basketball coach Mark Simons left in June to accept a basket ball coaching position at Geor gia College in Milledgeville, Ga. Canalis also previously ser\'cd as transfer coordinator for the St. Andrew admission office, but those duties have been transferred to counselor Lisa Gaw. Replacing Simons as men’s basketball coach is Ron Lievense. Most recently an as sistant at NCAA Division I- member Campbell University (1987-91), Lievense was the head men’s basketball coach at Averett College in Danville, Va. (1984-87), a graduate as sistant with the men’s basket ball program at Winona State Universit)' in Winona, Minn. (1983-82), an assistant men’s basketball coach at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minn. (1982- 83), and the head coach of the freshman basketball team at ThomaS! JefTefson Senior High School in Bloomington, Minn. (1981-82). Lievense’s new assistant is Cliff Dillard. Lievense and Dillard have worked together previously as Dillard was an undergraduate assistant basket- ball coach at Campbell University (1985-90) imme diately after a one-year stint as an assistant basketball coach at Otero Junior College in Lajunta, Colo. Dillard replaces Kirk Chandler as an assistant coach at St. Andrews. Ali Alwan is the new assis tant coach for both men’s and women’s soccer. Alwan is also the new men’s tennis coach, replacing Bruce Daniels, who coachcd one year. Alwan’s past collegiate coaching experience consists of serv'ing as an assis tant coach for the Auburn University at Montgomery soccer team during the 1990 season. Alwan also ran several youth soccer and basketball camps from 1980-87. Ben Guiliano is the new volleyball and softball coach, replacing Laurel Sue Smith. Guiliano came to St. Andrews from the Rochester Institute of Technolog\' in Rochester, N.Y., where he worked as women’s volleyball coach since 1987'. Guiliano was women’s and men’s volleyball and women’s softball coach at Genessee Community College in Batavia, N.Y. He also coached at Batavia High School and Notre Dame High School, both of which are located in Batavia, N.Y. Guiliano’s ca reer record as a volleyball coach prior to coming to St. Andrews was 393-141. Guiliano’s new assistant is Bill Rude, also of Rochester. Rude was the assistant volley ball coach at SUNY-Geneseo during the 1990 season, and he has also worked with the socccr teams at Ithaca College and Ithaca High School in Ithaca, N.Y. Additionally, Rude has worked as an assis tant baseball, football, basket ball and wrestling coach. Rude replaces Debbie Proctor as an assistant coach with the St. Andrews volleyball and soft ball teams. Steve Padget, a native of Ottumwa, la., has joined the St. Andrews baseball program as an assistant coach. Padget was an assistant coach at Wingate during the spring 1991 seas(jn. He will work primarily with the pitching .staff at St. Andrews. Before work ing at Wingate, Padget was head baseball coach for two years and assistant basketball coach for one year at Oak Ridge Academy, which is located near Greensboro. He was his school’s athletic conference coach of the year during both seasons at head coach. Padget played baseball collegiatelv at Iowa State University. Shelby French, director of the St. Andrew.s equestrian program, has added nvo people to her staff— Sallv Dohner of Southern Pines and Chris KelK’ of Landenberg, Pa. Dohner is the new head of the communit}' riding program and will also serve as assistant facility manager at Singing Wood Farm, home to the St. Andrews equestrian program. Dohner brings more than 30 years of teaching experience with riders of all ages, as well as 19 years as an American Horse Show Recognized Judge. A veteran of numerous years of riding, training horses and coaching, Kelly is the new Director of Riding and IHSA team coach. He replaces Jon Conyers, who left St. Andrews to accept a simi lar position with the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. St. Andrews' Men's Golf Team Begins Season The St. Andrews College Men’s golf team opened its sea son by playing in the Seventh Annual Francis Marion Col lege Fall Invitational Sept. 21- 22 at the Wellman Country Club in Johnsonville, S.C. St. Andrews posted a two day total of 676 to finish 24 outof27teamsentcred. David Greene shot an 82 borii davs to lead St. Andrews, followed by teammates William Carter (170), Mark Newton(176), David Spruill (1 77) and Da\'id Kaeli (76; first round only). The Citadel won the team competition with a 601. Belmont Abbey College was the top Carolina Conference team in the tournament with a ninth place total of627. Other Cl AC schools taking part were Pembroke State University (640,12th)., Mount 01i\e College (644,14th), Coker College( 646,15th) and Barton College (673,22nd).
