Benson Benson returned from the Far East by way of Seoul, Ko rea and Tokyo, where he met with ofiEicials to discuss the possibilities of international ex change relationships with St. Andrews. Benson noted that the College has a strong his tory of such exchanges. Through funding from the United Board, St. Andrews has had three visiting professors from Asia. Benson said he felt a special pride in the work, the St. Andrews faculty has done in building the College’s Asian Studies Program. “It is ar^- ably the b^t Asian Studies Program to be found among American liberal arts coUeges,” he said. Dean a long-term replacement was chosen from inside the St. Andrews community, Reuschling would check with the Student Life Committee. If a long-term replacement was picked from outside St. Andrews, the search commit tee, containing at least two or more students, would approve the decision, pending the ap proval from SGA. Based on the conclusions reached in a student Senate discussion on this matter two weeks ago, Lenni Jones, presi dent of Student Government, shares Reuschling’s preference that the new dean be a former student or current employee of St. Andrews. “Familiarity with St. Andrews is more im portant than having a degree in college administration.” Jones said that she desired a dean who would ‘Svork with students instead of trying to force new rules upon them.” Neal Bushoven, resident director of Mecklenburg resi dence hall and professor of politics, said that he also de sires someone with a St. Andrews background to fill the position. Bushoven called St. Andrews an “unlikely college” which called for someone fa miliar with its unique atmo sphere and diversity. Bushoven believes that the dean should be “deeply concerned about the welfare, growth and devel opment of students,” and someone who values dialogue, and is not afraid to argue or disagree with students. Loans affected approximately one- third of Metropolitan State’s loan recipients. Many students inconve nienced by the new system don’t know who to blame. During the Reagan admin istration the Gramm- Rudman- HoUings Deficit Reduction Act was established to eliminate the deficit. The act laid out specifications on where to cut the budget across the board for all government agencies, including financial aid. In December 1990, after Congress overspent the bud get, the Consolidated Omni bus Reconciliation Act was enacted as an attempt to save the financial aid budget by making changes before Gramm-Rudman went into effect. Ken Mclnerney, assistant director of Governmental Af fairs for the National Associa tion of Financial Aid Administrators in Washington D.C., anon-profitgroup work ing on pro-student legislation, says the new legislation is a burden on those schools with a low loan default rate. “We have advisors in Con gress working to help legisla tors review how the system is affecting schools,” Mclnemy says.
