NF.W ORLEANS

Mardi Gras, Bourbon
Street, jazz, and other
highly publicized images
are brought to mind when
one thinks of New Or
leans. Certainly the
eleven St. Andrews stu
dents who began their
1992 winter term with
]; the task of becoming
New Orleans-educated
5 did not realize how much
more the class would of
fer. Instructed by Carl
and Ellen Walters, the
group met often to expe
rience the culture and
history of this unique
city. Excursions to plan
tations, tours of selected
homes, a visit to an
above-ground cemetery,
and even a tour of a Mardi
Gras den allowed stu
dents to view first-hand
the special historical and
geographical traditions.
^ Much time was also al-
^ lotted for small group or
^ individual learning and a
^ variety of museums, pre-
^ served buildings, and
landmarks were avail-
^ able to the group. Re
gardless of whether one
was following a planned
I tour or even lost, a lot
1 was learned simply by
; strolling along the nar-
i row brick streets of the
I European-influenced
Kcity. Free time was spent
‘iin ways that were also
crucial to an understand
ing of the culture. Some
ventured into New Or
leans for a day of shop
ping at the markets or an
evening of jazz at the fa
mous Preservation Hall.
Bourbon Street offered
something for everyone
depending on the ex
travagance of their tastes.
The action never stopped
downtown. Here, one
could enjoy the free
lance painters and musi
cians in Jackson Square
or relax on the banks of
the Mississippi. No mat
ter where, eating was fun:
crawfish, alligator sticks,
gumbo and tasty beignets
were enjoyed!
These special group
and individual experi
ences were shared with
the others daily since
everyone enjoyed the
convenience of living
together in a guest hall at
Tulane University. Here,
the St. Andrews gang
created lasting friend
ships with each other and
also with the nearby resi
dents. Tulane also of
fered library access to a
reserved collection of
New Orleans materials.
These aided in the re
search for the
requieredterm paper.
Apart from the abundant
knowledge and precious
friendships gained, cer
tain other skills were ac
quired and refined while

Switzerland....For the
unexperienced traveler,
as well as the world trav

place to be. There are so
many opportunities for
travel that the few weeks
there are just not enough.
Surrounded by France,

perfect home-base for
someone who wants to
see the sights. Oh, and
don't forget that the Alps
are right there at your
doorstep! For the first

intimidating. And if you
get tired, or if your skis
feel tight, you can take a

or you can just walk
down that mountain! It
