March 1992 Opinion From The Editor’s Desk: Janna Turner Editor Once again the sound of numbers crunching and clacking calculators are sending chills up the spines of the faculty. We students realise that St. Andrews' financial standing is far from rock steady. Alumni giving, according to the propa... um... brochures, has exceeded goals and amazed stalwart cynics. Faculty and staff gave of themselves, finan cially, more than ex pected and once again tuition is on the rise. [Not to exceed our limits]. Admissions is crowing over anticipated success and the Board of Trust ees is talking about cut backs. What is wrong with this picture? Yes, we are in great shape, not perfect, but good. Why talk about cutbacks now after promising something very differ ent? In the time that I have been at St. An drews, the college has lost over 10 faculty members and countless staff. In defense, most of those people were re placed with some very valuable additions to St. Andrews. Last year 7 faculty left. ,The economy has not gotten much better and all the temptations to leave are still there. Show your professors [and the ad ministration] how much we appreciate them. Dare we say: you have to fight for the right to an education. Nothing comes on a silver plat ter. So, while the col lege accountants are crunching away with their numbers, do your part and tell the admin istration how you feel about your education. Letter From the President's Desk Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope ev eryone had a safe and enjoyable vacation. Now we head into the most exciting time of the year. The dogwoods are blooming, the trees are turning green, and even the bladderwort will appear. The activity level will intensify with the attempt to break the debate record, alumni weekend, Ganza, Honors Convocation, and graduation. Seniors will begin to be alternately ecstatic and melancholy as they experience their last student days at St. Andrews. Faculty will look a little tired from time to time as they struggle to get all the planned material into the courses before the end of the term. PRESIDENT REUSCHLING The semester is fly- o A Tfc x SriA Report Lennie Jones and ing by us. We've already been here six weeks. A lot has happened! To start off the semester the Board of Trustees came to S A for aone day meet ing on the 13th of Feb ruary. The precedent of allowing the President and the Vice President of Student Government into the meetings was set. The session was ba sically one of informa tion gathering for the Trustees. Campus Compact got underway in mid February. The goal of Campus Compact is to unite the communi ty ser vice efforts of uie vari ous clubs and organiza tions on campus. By spring, we would like to have formed a strong committee and begin fa cilitating joining the nationwide collegiate organization. We hope to build an elaborate community service net work and involve a high percentage of the stu dents in the effort so that our ties with the Laurin burg community can be ’ strengthened^ We have found volunteeE service to be a great educational experience and encour age each of you to check itoUt. ' Over the past few weeks you have prob ably noticed quite a few prospective students on campus. Admissions has b^n doing a wgnderful Kerrie Nuti job recruiting students. Next year's ffesh class promises to be large. We got the opportunity to meet many of the prospectives during Scholarship and Admit ted Student Weekends and enjoyed our interac tion with them. Since Winston Salem is going to close down next year, the campus is undergoing a major re- 'shuffle. The plan that has been devised is to make Wilmington co-ed. There was a campus fo rum on the residential redistribution on March 5th. A lot of concerns were addressed and ten sions eased at this meet ing. The first residential floor will be male and the top floor will be fe male. Details on room sign-up are being worked out. Housing contracts go on sale in Ae cashier's office on April 6th. We suggest youdon'tputoffthispur- chase this year or you might be living some where you dpn't particu larly wMt to! The senior class party ^ was held qn March 6th. , ^ Although "The Yarns from Outerspace" were late, everyone managed to occupy themselves. The band was worth the wait with their electric collection of classic rock. This year's senior class, though smaller in number, out-drank last year's class. Everyone had a great time! Con gratulations go out to Matt Sutherland. He was chosen by the sfenior ; ' ' cl4ss to ’be' the' Stud’ertt'”"’*'^ speaker. We wish him all the best in writing his speech. The Environmental Committee is working out the final details of an energy conservation program that will affect the entire campus. The proposed theme for next year is the Year of the Environment. To keep with this theme, we are trying to reduce the wasteful misuse of en ergy. Please be more en ergy conscious! Look for detail s regarding this plan in the immediate future around campus and turn off your lights when you leave your ^m! Elections for next year are here! If you , want a voice in next year'saffairs... GETIN- VOLVED! Nomination forms are in Student Life! We hope you are having a good spring se mester. Before you know it,, another school year will be coming to an end, so if you have any questions or con _ cems, let us know!
