From the Editor's Desk I Letter from the President warning: this is sappy stuff, those with weak stomach shouldn't continue without medical supervision. Several friends who are not graduating have complained in my pres ence, "All of my friends are leaving. What am I going to do next year?" Oh I can here the cynics now, "Just waste away and die, that's what ev eryone does when some one leaves - Get a life!" It is easy to take an above-it-all position and pretend not to be af fected. That's all right it is allowed, in fact en couraged by cynics world'round. This year during Ganza I was re minded of all of the people that I had some how lived without this past year. It was great to see them but it made me miss them more. I real ized that certain people just leave holes behind when they go. No one can fill their place or their shoes. One gets used to that hole until suddenly its full again and bigger than life. I got to thinking about it (dangerous thing to do on little sleep). There is this game that very small people can play (children). You climb out to the middle of a blanket and all your friends grab the edges and lift up and down. If you are ligh t enough you can bounce up very high. I would compare this to the first year of college. It's new and exciting and different and so many new people. As you go on in your college life rips and tears and holes appear in that 'security' blanket, friends disap pear, problems show that you never expected. Suddenly you realize that security blanket barely qualifies for a net it has so many gaping holes. But think back, wasn't there a time in Une lance St. Andrews Student Newspaper Janna Turner and Kristine Meehan Co-Editors EUanVfaltecs Production Assistant Yin Toh Copy Editor Janet Fancher Arts i Letters Editor Sports Editor Columnists: Angela A. Nearly ev eryone expressed mixed I emotions. There is the I satisfaction of finishing I the undergraduate expe- I rience tinged with sad- I ness about leaving St. I Andrews. There is ex citement about entering the "real world," muted by the ordeal of job hunt ing or the anxious an ticipation of graduate school. Having talked with numerous alums this weekend, I can assure you that you are well prepared for life beyond college. Alums consis tently express their feel ing that St. Andrews taught them to think, to reason and to love learn ing. These graduates of 10-20-30 years ago give frequent testimonials that St. Andrews pre pared them to deal with the constant uncertainty and change faced in their personal and profes sional lives. So leave St. Andrews with confidence—confi dence you can compete favorably in graduate President Reuschling school or^in the work place. And leave know ing the St. Andrews community wishes you Godspeed and looks for ward to your occasional return to campus to re new friendships and tell us how your story is un folding. your life when you is, the relationships, the would have given any- bonds you form will pull thing for a net below you through the life you? ahead. So hold on be- That's what college cause you need these people and it's okay, 'cause they'll need you too. A Final Farewell To the Saint Andrews Community, It has been my plea sure to serve as SGA president during the 1991-92 year. I would like to thank the mem bers of my cabinet for all their hard work and support: Kerry Nuti - Vice-president, Missy McGill - Treasurer, Laura Malinowski - At torney-General, Kim Jenkinson - Student De fense, Anna Crossman - Secretary and Christy Baumgard - President's Aide. Each of these women have proven themselves to be ex tremely affective lead ers and I know they will go far in their future en deavors. I wish them all my best. Student Government has had a very produc tive year. The creation of the External Affairs Committee on Senate is helping to develop a stronger tie with the Laurinburg Commu nity, along with efforts from Campus Compact, an organization started to consolidate commu nity service efforts. The Alumni Association was developed to bridge the gap between students and alumni. Members are available during alumni gatherings to help keep alumni up on SA news and to show them new changes oc curring on campus. Ex tended hours in both the Library and the P. E. Center have proven to be very beneficial to S A students. An increased interest in the environ ment and in saving money for St. Andrews was the driving force behind an energy con servation proposal that was approved by the President. The precedent was also set that the Stu dent Government Presi dent and Vice President were able to attend the Board of Trustees meet- igs. Student Government is an important aspect of Student Life at Saint Andrews. If you have a concern, I urge you to voice it! Saint Andrews is a small caring com munity in which every one has a voice and can make a difference. I wish next year's Cabinet, Senate and Activities Union all the best. Be creative and have a good time! Stu dent Government will fill many hours in your days, but it's worth it. Best of luck to each of you. Farewell Saint An drews. I will miss you. Sincerely, Lennie Jones SGA President 1991-92
