will receive a doctor of
humane letters. Author

Whisnant Swansea of
the Isle of Palms, S.C.,
will receive a doctor of
literature. The Rev. John
D. MacLeod Jr. of
Fayetteville will receive
a doctor of divinity.
Hanes has been a re
porter, columnist, fea
ture writer and copy edi
tor for the Twin City
Sentinel and Winston-
Salem Journal and Sen
tinel. He has also writ
ten poetry and novels,
including, "The Bat
Brothers" and "The Fleet
Rabble."

ber of the board of Di
rectors of Merchants De
velopment Co., director
of Chatham Manufac
turing Co., and The
Hanes Companies. Ac
tive in civic and art or
ganizations, Hanes has
served as president of
the Winston-Salem Arts
Council and the Rotary
Club. He is also a mem

and Anna Hodgin Hanes

for distinguished contri
butions to the fine arts.
He has read from his
works on campus and
helped St. Andrews ob
tain funding for its writ
ing and publishing pro
grams.
Like Hanes, Swansea
possesses both writing
talent and business acu
men. The Charlotte na
tive helped found Spirit
Square and started the
Charlotte Mecklenburg
poetry-in-the-schools
program. She now owns
and operates
Mindworks, Inc., and
also teaches and lec
tures. She is publisher
and editor of Poehouse
Press in Charleston,
S.C., and founder and
publisher of Red Clay
Books. Through
Mindworks, Swansea
provides training ses
sions and consultations
to government, busi
ness, education and
community organiza
tions.
She received her un
dergraduate degree in
Latin and education
from Meredith College
in 1954 and her masters
in English literature
from the University of
North Carolina at
Chapel Hill in 1955. For
the next five years, she
studied in Washington,
D.C., under the late poet
Ezra Pound and pub
lished translations from
Chinese poets.
