Page 8 The Lance Students Represent St. Andrews at Symposium . . ^ maktration and Saturday moming following 3 Six students have been se lected to represent St. Andrews at the 15 th annual symposium spon sored by the men of the First Pres byterian Church and the Presbyte rian Conference Center at Hilton Head, South Carolina. Kevin Howard, Jeff Markosky, Josh Miller, Kiley J. Pike, Tracy Reuschling and Laura Van Riper will attend the sympo sium “Ethics and the Decision Mak ing Process” November 5-7. Howard, Reuschling and Van Riper are education majors here at St. Andrews, while Markosky, Miller and Pike are business majors. . The students will be accom panied on the trip by Dr. O. Eugene Smith, chair of the St. Andrews Teacher Education Department, and accounting professor Bob Litdeson. Special Writer's Forum, Nov. 5 Many of you may have no ticed that St. Andrews has its very own writers forum. The forum ameets every Thursday night at 8pm in Mecklenburg main lounge. On certain nights you may see and meet a famous author or, on other nights you may be able to see and hear one of your friends read some of their own creations. Thursday, November 5th is a special night for the Writer’s Fo rum audience. Special writers wil! be on hand to read and entertain the listeners thoughout the evening. Sam Ragan, Clyde Edgerton, and Peter McNamara will be the major writers at the evening’s entertain ment. All of these fine gentlemen are well-known persons who write some of the best fiction and poetry. So, don’t forget about the special presentation on November 5th at Mecklenburg main lounge. Come on out and have an enjoyable evening,and make so new friends. Six inducted into Alpha Chi Six St. Andrews students received the honor Saturday of being inducted into Alpha Chi, a National College Honor Scholarship Society. At St. Andrews, juniors must have a 3.8 grade point average and seniors must have a 3.7 grade point average to achieve this distinction. The new Alpha Chi members are: Machelle AnnJanette Allman, Ruth Elizabeth Hayball, Heather Lee Jenkins, Rolf Peter Jeppson, Shad Kevin Luedke and Lisa Catherine Naczki. Alpha Chi is a coeducational society whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and univer sity students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. A Few Words From The Editor As one of the co-Editors of The Lance I would like to thank all of our writers for getting their work in on time. Also, I would like to thank Elaine Thomas, Communications, for her support during this first issue of The Lance. Enough of the mushy stuff let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. The next issue of The Lance will have many new and exciting improvements. Keep an eye open for Knight Light, a positive and enlightening column of issues ranging fro|n bungy jumping to world hunger. Take a Look at Your Neighbor. This is the ultimate way you can gossip about your suite mates, firiends or lovers without them even knowing. “How? " you might ask, because there are no names or identities used. Isn’t that going to be fun? Have fun St. Andrews, and remember not to eat the brown snow. Matt Peck Following registration and a dinner Thursday, the group will be welcomed by the president of the Men of the Church and the mayor of Hilton Head. Dexter F.Baker,cheif executive officer of Air Products and Chemicals Inc. will deliver the keynote address. A reception will follow the opening session. On Friday moming, the stu dents will be involved in discussion groups that will look at a variety of case studies built around the theme of the conference. Friday after noon, First Presbyterian Church will sponsor a variety of events. Guest at the conference will have an op portunity to tour the island, with the latter part of the afternoon devoted to a choice of golf, tennis, sailing and other beach activities. The students will be house and dinner guest of members of the First Presbyterian Church on Fri day. The highlight on Friday evening will be presentations of the colleges attending. Topics will include a variety of campus ethical issues. The conference will close Saturday morning following a fi nal case study discussion and sum mary presentatioli. Howard is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry G. Howard of Bennettsville, S.C. He is student teaching at Scotland High School in Laurinburg in secondary social studies and history with cooperat ing teacher Ann Stack. Markosky is the son of Ed ward Markosky of Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania. Miller is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwayne Miller of Plant City, Florida. Pike is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James G. Pike of Elizabeth City. Reuschling is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Reuschling of Laurinburg. Coop erating teacher for her teaching is Shirley Pait of the English depart ment of Scotland High School. Van Riper is the daughter of Colonel and Mrs. James Keith Van Riper, United States Marine Corps, of Camp Lejeune.
