Page 2 The Lance Be Proud, Be Strong, Be Black AWARDS PRESENTED: Artist Marvin Saltzman (left) and novelist Clyde Edgerton (right) received the Sam Ragan Award for their outstanding contributions to the fine arts of North Carolina. Mr. Ragan presented the awards. On November eighteenth, 1992, one of the most spectacular movies will be released into movie theaters na tionwide. The movie will most likely bring in over five million dollars, and with the money, there will probably come a lot of controversy. This movie, which will make film history is X. a biography about the famous black leader Malcolm X. It is directed by successful black film maker Spike Lee and starring an Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington as Malcolm X. Washington, known for his handsome looks and spellbinding charm. Ire has accepted one of the most chal lenging characters ever, and in my opinion, he has done an almost perfect performance. X will probably go down in history for one of Spike Lee’s most memorable films. Lee, known for his most talked- about film, Do the Right Thing, has really out done himself. X, being only three hours and twenty-one minutes long, will entice millionsofviewerson the lifeofMalcolm X. Lee states in an interview on BET (Black Entertainment Television), “1 wanted this to be a great film, and in order to do that, I had to show Malcolm’s complete life in every aspect. In three hours, I feel I did this.” (1 would hope so! Everybody should get their $5.00 worth). So people, brace yourself, and get ready for the X. See you there! Scrcea Demon Neck- Romantic By A.A. Lynch Columnist BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA What is with this bizarre fascination that our society seems to have with vampires? Could it be the strong sexual magnetism and the really cool fashion sense that the undead all seem to possess? Perhaps. As for myself, it is the envy of their nocturnal lifestyle. Can you imagine the joys of a life without a MWF 9:10 morning class? Well, it's not like I go out of my way to attend class at this point in the semester anyway. The hype-happy people at Columbia Pictures would have us drop everything and just go stand in lines to catch a glimpse of their latest Incarnation of the Count Geez- they've been advertising this thing like we've never seen a Dracula flick before. And guess what-we haven't-at least, not through the eyes of Francis Ford Coi^xHa. Probably best recognized for his epic Goc^ather se ries, director Coppola also places his emphatic, operatic stamp on this picture. And it's not too hard to see why he became involved with the story. Coppola tends to gravi tate towards stories centralizing around imprisoned men of power who have lost their souls to a dark world. Dracula Is an extreme; a man, robbed of love, who throws away his soul and enslaves himself to master a world of darkness and death. Pretty heavy stuff no doubt-it must be a philosophical thing. As for the acting, the cast has built-in star quality. Winona Ryder, Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, Richard E. Grant, Cary Elwes and Tom Waits- sounds like someone went the extra mile to ensure a megahit for Columbia Pictures-not to mention a few awards along the way. A sneaky suspicion tells me that Winona Ryder's role as Mina Murray has ushered her into the world of serious acting. She does a great job, but the glory clearly belongs to British angst-actor Gary Oldman in the title role. He is unforgivingly intense throughout the film and gives new meaning to the phrase "me and my shadow." James V. Hart's screenplay isn't exactly faithful to Stoker s novel and there are a few scenes towards the end that seem to drag unnecessarily. Dracula is rich and vibrant in color; lots of red and gold emphasizes the danger and passion of this tale. Visually, this film is stunning and could be considered as some of CoRX)la's best wodc to date. Perhaps it would be better titled as Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula. MPAA Rating: R Carmike Westwood 6-FayeuevUle Screen Demon Rating: Woo-hoo! Ravish my jugular!
