Page 2 Student Perspectives * Hdve you se6n America?’ Tt isnoteworlhvlhatthe jogging track? Since the presidental election of the previous fall, it has become noticeably apparent that a significant change is being pushed by a minority segment of the American public. This new attitude has been fermenting for many years, but with the entry of a liberal democrat into the White House, the advocates of this viewpoint have crawled out of the woodwork. To myself and many other Americans, it would seem that these persons (dare I call them Americans) are attempting to alter the history of our nation. Even more importantly though, they are attempting to alter our national spirit and pride. the United States of America was founded upon the premises that we all hold certain unalienable rights, which no man can put assunder. All of these rights, too numerous to mention here in such limited space, but hopefully known to us all, lend to create the most valuable re source we have—individuality. It was the small busi nessman and the individual en trepreneurs that carried this country to the world status it now claims. Yankee (or Ameri can) ingenuity is what brought the world the automobile, the telephone, the computer, and other marvels of technology. And it was many of these indus tries which employed millions of our relatives and friends. These men and women worked with one purpose in mind—^to become financially self-suffi cient. There was a time in America when it was unthink able and injurious to one’s own pride to accept a handout of any kind. Yet, forty years after the New Deal and the introduc tion of the welfare state, we now have people in this nation who would rather sit on their butts and live off the sweat of hard working Americans. These people have nothing to offer, other than their services as leeches on the savings of the American taxpayers. It is because of welfare and other entitlements (govern ment handout programs) that we have a $4 trillion deficit. En- Logan Hejl titlements make up over 50% of the budget. When President? Clinton raises our taxes (keep in mind that no tax increase in his tory has ever decreased the defi cit) and refuses to cut spending, this is where the money will go. The deficit will not see one red cent. It is noteworthy that the children of America have taken to bake sales and other methods of fund raising to raise money to help pay off the enormous defi cit. But there are two troubling points about this approach. One is in the logic of it all. Say if these kids can raise $ 1.5 million per year, which is entirely pos sible, to contribute to the war on the deficit. It will take 2.8 mil- linn years to erase the $4.2 tril lion hole we have dug for our selves. They have good inten tions, butelementary schoolchil dren do not have the ability to grasp such a vast sum of money. (For allthosewhohave a liking to H. Ross Perot, where is he with his billions to stand alongside these industrious chil dren?) The second trouble spot is that the current administration knows these contributions will not help, yet it keeps the money. Quite possibly to pay for Presi dent Clin ton ’ s new White House jogging track? The point in all of ihis is to remember that the demo crats have been in control of Congress since 1948, and dur ing that same time period, only four out of eight presidents have been republican. It has been the democrats at the helm of this sinking ship, and through their rhctoric they refuse the republi cans entry to the bridge. The money has not gone into the pockets of the upper and middle classes, yet they are the ones who have earned it The govern ment eats it all up in taxes and spits it out to the poor. A fallacy pushedonihe American people is that the rich are the greedy persons of the nation. I propose that the truly greedy are the liberal special in- terestgroupsand those whothink they are owed everything be cause someone else had the in telligence and will to earn it see AMERICA, page 3 Enough's Enough! SAGA changes Image By Lucian H. Neal II Who or what gives a per son the right to take the law into his or her own hands? "Nothing," I say! Michael Griffin, 31, shot Dr. David Gunn three times in the back at close range, because Dr. Gunn was one of the many doctors who performed abor tions in Pensacola, Fla., should have the book thrown at him. Griffin, a member of Rescue America (the group who opposes abortions), staunchly disagrees with abortions. He told Dr. Gunn, "Don't kill anymore babies" before firing several shots from a gun which he had con cealed. I agree with our newly confirmed attorney general, Janet Reno, who said it's "a horrible and tragic crime." If anyman or woman kills some one else who dosen't agree with every point of his or her beliefs, then that killer for feits all the rights that our Constitution gives him or her. Although this looks like a "Rescue America" plot to get rid of doctors performing abortions, the organization has denounced the killing. "Our commitment to the dig nity of life stands for the bom as well as the unborn." said Keith Tucci, a Rescue America member. Even though the group has denied killing the doctor, abortion rights supporters still blame groups like Rescue America "for creating a vio lent atmosphere" and held a candle-light vigil, said USA Today. President Clinton even said that no one seeking medical care nor the doctors providing the care "should have to endure harassments, threats, and intimadation." "They built this climate, and they are responsible," said Patricia Baird-Windle, a Florida abortion rights activ ist. I strongly agree with Mrs. Baird-Windle. Groups like Rescue America have formed this climate, so let them live with the consequences! Tanya Evanchik The mere thought of SAGA, in the past, has not been a pleasant one among most of the student body at St. Andrews, but njcently their image has changed for the better. Student-Manager Dan Albert seems enthusias tic about their "new image" and had this to say about his job, "As an employee, Marriot is a #1 class organi zation. As a student, their are many things I see which are wrong and need change, and fortunately due to my posi tion! am abletoimplemment such changes and be the eyes and voice for the entired stu dent body." Many of the students at St. Andrews often com plain about the quality and service they receive at SAGA, but don't bother to voice their opinion and hope for change. The current staff is continuously working to wards improving SAGA and pleasing all the students. "Ri chard Jacobs, the currcnt Manager, is open and recep tive to all suggestions and is willing to accommodate any thing asked by the students of St. Andrews," states Albert. Throughout the years, students have wit nessed many changes iii SAGA, all due to the voicing of opinions and the workers pushing for a bcter environ ment to work in and be en joyed by all. Today, it is /a V't'jiv.') i;i iilil! obvious that the workers are still striving to be belter in everyway, and appear more pleasant than ever before. Many changcs have been apparent within the past few years; such as new tables and chairs, better workers, more choices, more efficient system, higher food quality, extended breakfast hours and the accommodation of all St. Andrews students. Years ago there was no meal exchange plan, no necessary selections for tlic vegetarians, or any of the great variety of bars they now con tain. The pastabarisnewthis year and has been a great im provement and love of many, also the potatoe, dessert, and vegetable bars includc miiny See SAGA page 8 Get 'high' legally ? Humm By Lucian H. Neal II I believe that away we could reduce cur astronomi cal deficit problem is to legal ize certain things, such as marihuana and certain other illegal drugs, and prostitu tion. I believe this way, be cause we could, intum, tax these items and help to re duce our extremely high defi cit. Taxation would increase the cost of the said items or service which would help to reduce the large number of offenders, hopefully. If one looks at the problem from a logical perspective, you will likely agree with my view. My perspective is that the "average" human being (whether male or female, ad dict or not) will continue with his or her trait whether it is illegal or not. I'll ask you a question, now: What’s one of the first "highs" that a person gets when engaging in an il legal activity? Correct, a "high" of doing something that’s considered a "no-no". If you ask anyone who's do ing anything illegal, one of the respones will likely be- "I feel chaUenged not to get caught, it's fun!" This ch lenge can be seen as a kino o "high" for most people- young and old alike. If our government does legalize these things and puts a tax on these goods and ser vices, like everything e*®' just think af all the revenue that the government will re ceive.
