Page 3 Or. W.D. White Honored Matt Peck ,C|aff Editor, On April 22, St. Andrews held its annual awards con vocation. One of those rec ognized during the event was Dr. W. D. White, Distin guished Professor of the Hu manities. Dr. White will be leaving the faculty of St. Andrews to teach at the medical school at the University of North Caro lina at Chapel Hill. Dr, White has been at St. Andrews since 1965 after leaving a position at Duke University. In 1983, Dr. White was given the honor of becoming a Distinguished Professor of Humanities, one of the first ever to receive such an honor at St. Andrews. He possesses Two Doc torate degrees, one from the University of Texas in En glish and German, and the other from Princeton Univer sity in Religion. He has authored several books during his illustrious career, and he has written over two dozen articles on Victo rian Literature. He has been the recipient of several grants and fellow ships which are nationally competative. Dr. White has taught at Baylor University, St. Olaf College, Duke University, TexaTech University ,Indiana University, and The Univer sity of Arkansas College of Medicine. rvjB Dr. White (right) receives praise from Dr. Alexander AMERICA The Democratic party finally has what it wants, total control of the govemmenL But that will be its undoing, for there is no longer a republican presi dent to lay the blame for all of our problems. Anything that is screwed up now will undeniably be ihe fault of the democrats. Symbolism now reigns over America. Substance no longer has a place here. Words are more impcKtant than deeds. But the poor, homeless, and truly needy need education and ac tion. The Democratic party fails to see that caring about others’ feelings will just not cut it. And in the results of the last election,. four of every ten Americans^- lieve our problems will be solved by false rhetoric and improper actions. If that is the case, I would rather stand in the bread lines of Russia where everyone knows that they are getting screwed than to see the United States of America, the greatest nation on earth, become a hol lowed out shell of its past. Thanks, but no thanks! ATHLETES Dr. G. Tyler Miller is Honored Matt Peck Staff editor On April 8, St. An drews honored one of its former faculty members. Dr. G. TylerMiller, with a recep tion and convocation, j.. - in i^.'^Kliller left active teaching to write full time. He has managed to publish eight textbooks in 21 editions, being used in ap proximately three-fourths of the universities and collegesin the United StatesHLiving in the Environment, his most popular text, is in its seventh edition. Living in the Envi ronment was the only text book to make The Ecologist's top 20 list of books witten about the environment. Miller has a strong enviromental commitment. He lives and works in an enviromentally safe office. Dr. G. Tyler Miller and for every tree used to make his books he plants an other tree in a tropical rain forest For each tree that he uses in a manuscript. Dr. Miller plants fifty trees. Dr. Miller taught at St. Andrews for 10 years, during this time he provided leadership in developing out standing interdisciplinary and team taught programs. Dur ing his tenure as associate dean of instruction, Miller re structured the science curricu lum, bringing together a team of well-trained and dedicated scientist to teach St. Andrews' students. His radical ideas opened the way for the design of the internationally ac claimed John Blue Science Laboratory. He also helped raise funds in major founda tion grants to design, build and equip the John Blue Sci ence Laboratory. While teaching. Miller refined his ideas and research in enviromental stud ies. He was apioneerthinker in enviromental issues, and he understood the urgency of the threats to the environment long before they became a major issue. He completed a bach elor of science degree in chemistry at Virginia Mili tary Institute and holds a doc torate in physical chcmistry from the University of Vir ginia. Guises: a Chainsong for the Muse, his 12th volume of poetry by Northern Lights Press. A native of Oregon, Guises is Bayes’ second col lection of selected shorter poems (1970-1990). His othcrwo±,TheCasketmaker contained eariier shorter po ems (1960-1970). Bayes has also written longer poems that are in four volumes called The Umapine Tetralogy, the last of which came out in 1979. His manuscripts also include a volume of short stories,a book of criticism on John Reed, two works for the stage, and five folios with aij- isL Bayes'writing career began while attending afifth grade at a small public school in Oregon. Through highschool he continued his writing and began to write more serious manuscripts, he was graduated from Oregon State College where he com pleted his bachelor's and master's degrees. At the Uni versity of Pennsylvania, Bayes completed graduate studies in American Litera ture. Bayes' other acedemic accoplishments include studying at the University of British Columbia, Colorado State University and Trinity CoUege in Dublin, Ireland. Prior to teaching at St. An drews, he taught at Eastern Oregon State College and the University of Mary land. During his distin guished career Bayes has re ceived many awards for his writing and teaching of writ ing. He is a life member of the N.C. Poetry Society and the Oregon Poetry Society.
