Computer Lab Commandments
St. Androids hard at work in the computer lab
BY REGINA T.
If you have not had time to enjoy
the advantages of the St. Andrews
College Network, which now in
cludes E-Mail access, then you
are one of the few. The majority
of students consider the opportu
nity to utilize the network as a
definite advantage. However,
there are some specific points that
every student should keep in
mind.
St. Andrews is responsible for
maintaining and providing access
to the Computer Network and
Colfege-owned computer equip
ment for the use of the College
Community. They are not di
rectly responsible for user files
inadvertently lost or damaged.
This is the user’s own responsi
bility. Thus, the user is encour
aged to properly format and make
one or more backups of important
files on personal discs.
Speaking of personal, St. An
drews is also not responsible for
providing a system that allows
users to store “confidential” infor-
HARRINGTON
mation and insights into your per
sonal psyche off the College Net
work. From time to time it may
be necessary for Computer Ser
vices personnel to view the con
tents of files. If the file violates
College policy, the user could be
penalized. Also, Messages sent on
PEGASUS Mail can be viewed
and the sender tracked down. If
the messages are viewed by the
Director of Computer Services as
in violation of College Policy (ha
rassment, sexually explicit, etc.),
the user could loose his or her
computer privileges. Keep in
mind that the user is responsible
for any actions taken under his or
her password. Keep your pass
word private and change it peri
odically. Using the College Net
work involves just a little bit of
basic common sense. Audible so
cializing should be limited in the
Computer Labs. Take time out
to dispose of your own trash and
mind your manners. Don’t expect
the Computer Services
Staff and work-study students to
play parent. Each user is respon
sible for his or her own data,
books, printouts, etc... To answer
a few of the most asked questions:
Guest accounts are limited to the
Liberal Arts Building, Lab B from
now on (take time to read the
LOG ON remarks). No, you can
not use the LaserJet Printer in the
Detamble Computer Lab. Check
to make sure that you are con
nected to the printer in which you
wish to print to before you com
plain about the printer not work
ing.
Tell friends and family to type
(YOUR USER NAME)
@tartan.sapc.edu (completely in
lower case letters) if they want to
send you a message on E-Mail.
Do not bother to ask about when
in-room modem access for the
network can be expected — it has
not been determined as of yet.
The Computer Services Staff
is hard at work and the work-
study students are in the Labs for
extra aid when the need arises.
Pay attention to the POLICY
ON USE OF COMPUTERS,
SOFTWARE, AND COL
LEGE NETWORKS which
should be visibly posted in each
Lab. Have fun and take the op
portunity to utilize the network
and enjoy the St. Andrews advan
tage.
Why not spend Winter Term
in...
Korea?
And who better than
Howard Reichner to
show youthe way?
You’ll spend 2 nights in
Seoul and interact with
other Korean students.
(Cost: somewhere between
$1,200 and $1,500.)
For the time of your life,
it’s a bargain!
Sara Griffit (right) and Sue Lewke and the rest of the SAGE 105
