Stand up and cheer!
Fall break is here!

At 6:00 on Friday, Oct. 11, Fall
Break will begin. For a few short days,
students will be able to go home, visit
friends or at least sleep in. They will
finally have an excuse not to do their
homework; the library will be closed
from Saturday through Monday. Classes
will resume Wednesday, Sept. 16.
But that won’t matter to the many
students who are taking this opportunity
to go home for a couple of days.
The day after students return, reg
istration will begin for off-campus win
ter term classes. The day after that.
Midterm grades are due.
The break from pressure won’t last
long, but while it lasts, students plan to
enjoy it. For weeks signs have been ap
pearing around campus and on the
internet as students try to find rides
home.
Even the staff will get a break as
the PE center will be closed on Monday
and the cafeteria will have an abbrevi
ated schedule for the duration of the
break.
The book store will even be clos
ing for a couple of days as it goes through
minor renovations.
Between hurricanes and the Cen
tennial celebration and the constant
stream of parties and plenaries and ex
ams and papers, it’s been an exciting first
few weeks of school, but it hasn’t ex
actly been calm.
Now fall break brings the chance
to stop and smell the roses. At least un
til Wednesday morning at 9;00.

Three named October
“Scholars of the Month”
Gregory P. Marshall II, Audrey Wiggins and Christi Pietsch were named
“Scholars of the Month” for October. The three participated in the Abbott Labora
tories Summer Research Initiative at St. Andrews. Marshall and Wiggins took part
this past summer, while Pietsch was a 1995 Summer Reserach Fellow.
Marshall, a junior from Starke, Florida, is a biology major. Wiggins, a junior
from Ocala, Florida, is majoring in sports medicine. Pietsch, a senior from
Hoehenkirchen, Germany, is a chemistry major.
Dixon to tour dorms

In the next few weeks,
new Campus Director of Pub
lic Safety Michael Dixon will
be visiting the dorms in the eve
nings, but he won’t be on pa
trol. Dixon plans to spend at
least an evening in every dorm
getting to know the students.
“We need to be allies, not ad
versaries,” Dixon said.
Dixon worries that the
campus police have gotten a
bad reputation and would like
to remind the students that he
and the rest of his team are on
their side. “It’s a matter of dif
fusing misconceptions,” Dixon
states.
Dixon hopes that the stu
dents aren’t worried when they
see him walking around their
dorms. “Police presence in the
dorms is intrusive,” he says,
“but I don’t know any better
way to meet the students.”
He feels that enforcing
the rules is really only half of
his job and that if he gains the
smdents’ trust, everyone’s life
will be easier. But that doesn’t
mean he’s going to be easier on
everyone. “Sometimes RA’s
are reluctant to enforce dorm
rules, and we want them to
know they have our support ”
Dixon says.
Overall, Dixon is not
worried about the students of St.
Andrews. He calls the SAPC
campus “relatively mild.”
“Most St. Andrews students are
very respectful,” Dixon says.
