On Thursday, Feb.27, the Knights played second-ranked New York Tech. The score in no way shows the hard work and determination of the Knights. The Knights lost 23 to II. To score eleven times against a second ranked team is in itself outstanding, not to mention the efforts of our two goal ten ders Salvatore Morale and Bud Wye. They blocked a combination of 32 shots by NYT. Morale had the cage in the first half, with Wye taking it in the second, allowing NYT only 5 goals in the second half Goals were scored by: Russ Illmensee-2, Ryan Flippance-1, Tom Reilly-2, Brad MacArthur-4, David Pruitt-1, Assists were made by: Russ Illmensee-I, Kevin McGaw-1, Ryan Flippance-2, and Tom Reilly-3 Sunday, the Knights played Bos ton College. The final score was Knights 6, Boston 16. The Knights put forth a great effort the entire game. It LaX Begins by Marilym Oliver Our St. Andrews Lacrosse team started off the season by playing in the Duke Invitational on February 8. It was a rainy, wet and cold Saturday morning when they played Duke (who is ranked 9th in the Division I poll) to whom they lost 14-3 and then Hampden-Sydney who won 5-4. After warming up and stretching for five minutes, the team was able to go out onto the field and hold on de fense for three minutes of running time. Defense and midfield had the mo^ to . 5 during the game because it wa? f- ficult to play against Duke's ski d players. Although this is true, and they did score several times, Duke's defense could not get tight enough to prevent the three goals scored by Michael French, Brad MacArthur and Kevin McGraw. Our team wanted to win against Sivisii.. Basketball from page 8 rebounds, with special focus and con centration apparent in the efforts. Branam displayed some femcy footwork to stay inbounds and Larson managed some impressive steals late in the game. When time ran out, the scoreboard read 73-68, with the Lady Knights continuing their home winning streak. On February 13 the Lady Cobras of Coker cay started off the game with a steal and Patterson opened the scoring. Holley and Branam combined to force a Duke, but was not saddened by the loss. They realize how good Duke is and the team is glad that they were able to score on Duke and became more con fident in their skills after the game. On the other hand, the game against Hampden-Sydney was much more challenging. This team had the same capabilities as ours did, and thus created a close game. Our team lost by one in the last minute of the game and it was a struggle to hold'a tying score. It was a challenge to hold the team on cucti a tight defense, but they were able to do it. The second weekend of the sea son, February 15, our team played a scrimmage game against the Fort Bragg army team and beat them 22-7. Although Fort Bragg did not have all of their play ers, and the location of the game was changed at the last minute, they turnover with the team defense follow ing that up by forcing a 30 second vio lation. Franklin showed good hustle, running down a loose ball, but she was unable to retain S.A. possession. She did, however, add a nothing but net three pointer to aid the cause. The team fought hard and went to the halftime locker room tied at 24. But Coker came out with a faster tempo and a more physical style of play in the second half The Lady Knights continued to press hard but some questionable calls by the refs cre ated foul trouble for the team. Patterson fouled out and the team struggled to came off to an interesting start when Boston slashed one of its own players in the ribs. Salvatore Morale played his best game in goal so far this season. He had 26 saves and made some outstand ing blocks with the help of his defense. Earle Grey played outstanding defense for the knights, while Jason Norris con tributed strongly to the offense. Goals for the Knights were scored by: Tom ReilIy-2, Brad MacArthur-2, Dave Long- 2. Assists were made by: Kevin McGaw-2, Brad MacArthur-1, and Dave Ryan-1 struggled to play a good game. Veteran Dave Long even bragged about his four goals and four assists in the game. Loyal fans drove up to see the game and one commented,"the defense was better at the Fort Bragg game than at the Duke Invitational." On the whole, this should be a '■oi'.d year fnr the lacrosse tean, Ai- | though many are just rookies, they play as a team and hold like a team. Every one gets playing time, even the new rookies who came in this semester: David Pruitt and Ryan Flippance. So come help cheer the lacrosse team to victory. IF by Melissa Collins Our Rugby Rhinos played the use Gamecocks at home on February 22. The team suffered many injuries in the contest, but contin ued the uphill battle. The use team had the size and the numbers but the SA squad had the heart. They kept the game interesting, but came away with an un fortunate loss. Editor’s notes: First of all. I’d like to welcome Mary Fleetwood and Marilynn Oliver, the Lance’s newest sports writers. They will be covering lacrosse and other articles. Also, you may have noticed that that some of the ar ticles are from winter sports, even though we’re into the spring season. We thoiieht it was important to wrap up the last season and we wanted to make sure all the players got credit where credit was due. So we’re ruiming articles on both sea sons. Enjoy! *• connect offensively. The end result was a 66-44 Coker victory. Senior Day was held during the final home game of the season against the Flyin Fleet of Erskine. Seniors Michelle Branam, Kristi Ballard, Cristie Patterson, and LaTonya Holley were honored in pregame festivities. Patterson started the game off by win ning the jump. When the offense was unable to capitalize on the possesion, Ballard stepped up to make a steal. Patterson opened the scoring two pos sessions later with a driving basket and subsequent foul shot. Branam showed her scrappiness by forcing two turn overs on the following Fleet posses sions. Holley managed a steal on an inbounds play to allow another SA score. Despite the unbalanced offici ating of the half, the score was 20-18 in favor of SA at the break. The defense continued to show its dominance but the offense had trouble getting started. Franklin and Ballard both had nice steals to the basket, bringing SA closer to the Fleet. Yet fouls continued to haunt the team. In the end, despite a wonderful effort by the seniors, the Lady Knights were on the losing end of a 50-43 score.
