15,1998 Sports jvtny Women’s basketball wrap up L.. rniiitit added a three off a McGowan . ^ by Mel Collins The Lady Knights finished the season with a 2- 24 record. They played hard but their limited numbers made the season difficult. But the season was not a total loss. There were several high lights to be remembered. Like the game February 16 against the Pfeiffer Falcons. The defense got it started with steals by Mary Kate McGowan and Emily Rogers on the first two Lady Falcon possessions. The same duo started the scoring with a two and three respec tively. Jennifer Franklin then added a three off a McGowan steal to put the Lady Knights ahead at the first time-out 8-3. The team was a balance of ag gressive defense and finesse in the offensive game. Each player contributed points in the first half, along with defensive plays to gain possession. Freda Schlaman scored the final two points of the half to make the score 3 5-24 in favor of SA. The second half started again with strong play. McGowan was fouled and scored the first point of the half from the line. Rogers forced a turn over to allow Tonia Zehr to add her first two of an eight point second half effort. Farah Allen continued her defensive style in play, forcing key turn overs to help the Lady Knights increase their score. Beth Larson, the team’s leading scor ing in the game with 18, played aggressively to help with the defensive effort as well. This game showed a balance of team lacking in many other contests. As a result, the Lady Knights came away with their second win of the season, 66-63. They showed the prom ise of the underclassmen, allow ing a positive outlook going into next season. tiveiy. jciiiiiici 1 laiiiviiii uii.-.. o--- A Season of Baseball by Mary Fleetwood St. Augustine- Knight's baseball has been working hard this season. This title, shared with Queens, gave them the number two seed for the CVAC tournament and a first round home game. The game was played Febru ary 25 against the Longwood Lancers. Deon Wingfield opened the scoring with his first two points of a fifteen point effort. These points were enough to give him over a thousand points for his career, allowing him to join Nick Mitchell in that distinction. A rejection by Anthony Rollins and a steal by Wingfield were needed be fore the next Knight’s basket was scored. Steve McCorkle joined the Rollins defensive effort with a pair of first half rejections of his own. Joe Jessen, Brian McCollum and Ken Evans also added some impressive defensive plays to force turnovers. But this was a game stronger in offense than defense. Evans scored fifteen of his team leading twenty-four in the first half, with a trio of three pointers and a matching trio of twos. Jessen added a nice drive to the basket for two but it was a Rollins dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. McCollum added a three at the first half buzzer to finish off the first half scoring with SA ahead 52- 31. The second half started off a bit slower in the scoring for the Knights. It took two forced turnovers by Mitchell and McCollum, and defensive rebounds by Rollins and Wingfield before Evans was able to score the first two of the half Rollins put an excla mation point on the starters’ efforts with a 360 degree dunk. The Knights starters soon turned it over to the rest of the team, who showed just how strong a bench they have. John Walker led the backup squc!d with nine points, with Ryan Alexander a close second with eight. Ben Beshears and Omar Cooper added four and two respec tively in their limited play.
